The bag was heavier than it looked. He stopped under a street lamp and opened it. Inside were some papers, a mobile phone and a bundle of notes — more money than he had earned in the whole of that year. Jabbar sat down on the footpath with the bag in his lap. His daughter needed an operation, and for three months he had failed to arrange the money for it. Nobody had seen him pick the bag up. Nobody would ever know. He sat there for a long time. Then he turned his rickshaw round and pulled it back to New Market. The shops were closing and the road was almost empty. He waited by the gate, asking every man who passed whether he had lost anything that evening. At about ten o'clock Karim Sahib came running back, pale and out of breath. When Jabbar held out the bag he could not speak for a moment. He counted nothing. He opened the bundle and offered half of it to the rickshaw puller. Jabbar refused. The money was not his, he said, and he had only returned what belonged to another man. Karim Sahib asked why he had then waited three hours in the cold. Jabbar said that otherwise he would not have been able to look at his daughter. The next morning Karim Sahib came to Jabbar's house with a doctor. He paid for the operation himself, and later gave Jabbar steady work in his own shop.
