প্রশ্নে যা দেওয়া থাকে — the beginning you are given
The canal along the edge of Nayanpur had once carried water to every field in the village. By the time Alamgir finished school it was choked with plastic, water hyacinth and the rubbish of forty houses. In the monsoon it overflowed into the road, and in summer it stank. Everyone complained about it…
Completed story (210 words)
At every tea stall the men agreed that somebody should do something, and that the union parishad should have done it years ago. Then they went home. Nobody went near the water. One morning in January, Alamgir walked down to the canal alone with a spade and began pulling out the hyacinth. People passing on the road stopped to laugh at him. One man asked how much he was being paid. He said he was being paid nothing, and went on working. He came every morning for six days. On the seventh, two boys from his class came with him. On the tenth, an old farmer whose land lay beside the canal arrived with his own spade, said nothing at all, and simply started at the other end. By the end of the month there were more than thirty of them, including two of the men who had laughed. They cleared four hundred metres. The union parishad sent a van for the rubbish and, a little later, money for a low brick wall along the worst section. That summer the canal did not stink, and in the monsoon the road stayed dry. Alamgir had called no meeting and made no speech. He had simply started, and the village had followed.
Moral ·
One pair of hands is enough to begin; the rest arrive when they see the work being done.

Alamgir called a meeting and gave a speech about unity.
He walked down to the canal alone with a spade and began.
The point is that he started rather than talked, so a speech contradicts the story's own moral.
Slowly everyone joined him and the canal was cleaned.
On the seventh, two boys came. On the tenth, an old farmer arrived with his own spade.
Numbers make the growth visible; slowly everyone joined asks the reader to take it on trust.
The canal was full with rubbish.
The canal was choked with rubbish.
Full takes of, not with — and choked with is the phrase that fits a blocked canal.
So we should all keep our village clean and work together.
One pair of hands is enough to begin; the rest arrive when they see the work being done.
The moral should restate what this story proved, not issue a general instruction.
- Does a completing story need a named place?
- It helps a great deal. Nayanpur costs one word and makes the whole story read as observed rather than invented.
- Should the hero succeed completely?
- Not necessarily. Four hundred metres of a longer canal is more believable than all of it, and believable scores better.
- How do I write a moral that does not sound preachy?
- Say what the events showed, in the story's own terms. If the sentence would make just as much sense without the story, it is too general.
