Introductionভূমিকা

In Bangla these two ideas never touch. Comparison uses চেয়ে or থেকে; sequence uses তারপর. There is no world in which a Bangla speaker mixes them up — until they cross into English, where the two words differ by one vowel and, in a Bangladeshi mouth, sound identical. That is the whole problem. “This phone is better then that one” never gets corrected, because the reader still understands it. It just quietly marks the writing as careless.

বাংলায় এই দুটো ধারণা কখনো একে অন্যকে ছোঁয় না। তুলনায় বসে “চেয়ে” বা “থেকে”; ক্রমে বসে “তারপর”। বাংলাভাষী এ দুটো গুলিয়ে ফেলবেন — এমন কোনো সম্ভাবনাই নেই। সমস্যা শুরু হয় ইংরেজিতে গিয়ে, যেখানে শব্দ দুটোর পার্থক্য একটামাত্র স্বরবর্ণের, আর বাংলাদেশি উচ্চারণে দুটোই হুবহু এক শোনায়। পুরো ব্যাপারটা এতটুকুই। “This phone is better then that one” কখনো শুধরে দেওয়া হয় না, কারণ পাঠক অর্থটা ঠিকই বোঝেন। শুধু লেখাটা নীরবে অযত্নের ছাপ পেয়ে যায়।

'Then' belongs to time: next, after that, at that time. 'Than' belongs to comparison: bigger than, more than, rather than. They are not variants of one word — they never do each other's job, in any sentence.

**কৌশলটা অক্ষরেই আছে।** th**e**n — “tim**e**”-এর মতো, সময়ের শব্দ; th**a**n — “comp**a**re”-এর মতো, তুলনার শব্দ। আরও সহজ একটা জোড়া: **then** আর **when** — দুটোই সময়ের, আর দুটোরই মাঝে e। **কেন কান এখানে সাহায্য করে না।** ইংরেজিতে than-এ থাকে /æ/ (cat, man-এর স্বর) আর then-এ থাকে /ɛ/ (bed, pen-এর স্বর) — দুটো আলাদা স্বরধ্বনি। বাংলায় এই দুটোর পার্থক্য শব্দার্থে কোনো কাজে লাগে না, তাই আমাদের কানে দুটোই “দেন” হয়ে যায়। এ কারণেই এই জোড়াটা উচ্চারণ শুনে নয়, **অর্থ ধরে** ঠিক করতে হবে: বাক্যে তুলনা আছে কি না, শুধু এটুকু দেখুন। **Than যেখানে বসে:** bigger than, better than, more than, less than, older than, cheaper than, rather than, other than, no sooner… than। **Then যেখানে বসে:** ক্রম (“First boil the water, then add the tea”), অতীতের সময় (“I was a student then”), শর্তের ফল (“If it rains, then we will stay home”), আর “তাহলে” অর্থে (“You are tired? Then rest.”)। **সাথে দুটো ভুল, যেগুলো এখানকার খাতায় এই শব্দটার আশেপাশেই ঘোরে।** এক, **double comparative** — “more taller than”, “more better than”। ইংরেজিতে হয় -er, নয়তো more — দুটো একসাথে নয়: ✅ taller than, ✅ more beautiful than। দুই, **তুলনার পরের সর্বনাম** — “He is taller than I am” পুরো রূপে সবচেয়ে নিরাপদ, আর কথ্য ইংরেজিতে “taller than me”-ও চলে; পরীক্ষার খাতায় প্রথমটাই লিখুন। আর মনে রাখবেন, than-এর পরে তুলনাটা যেন সমগোত্রীয় হয়: ❌ *Dhaka's population is bigger than Khulna.* ✅ *Dhaka's population is bigger than Khulna's.* — জনসংখ্যার সাথে জনসংখ্যার তুলনা, শহরের সাথে নয়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • He is taller then his brother.

    He is taller than his brother.

    Two people are being compared, so it is 'than'.

  • I finished the work, than I went home.

    I finished the work, then I went home.

    This is a sequence of events — 'then'.

  • More then five hundred people came.

    More than five hundred people came.

    'More than' is always a comparison.

  • I would rather stay home then go out.

    I would rather stay home than go out.

    'Rather … than' is a fixed comparison pattern.

Both are used. 'Taller than I am' is the safest full form for exams; 'taller than me' is normal in speech and increasingly accepted in writing.

Can 'then' start a sentence?
