A statement of purpose is a one-page essay that answers four questions: what you want to study, what you have already done that prepares you for it, why this department in particular, and what you intend to do afterwards. It is not a life story, and it is not a letter — it has no 'Dear Sir' at the top.

A statement of purpose is a short, structured essay submitted with a university application, usually of about one page unless the form states a word limit, in which the applicant sets out an academic goal and supports it with specific evidence — a project, a thesis, a job — rather than with adjectives about themselves.

SOP-তে সবচেয়ে বেশি যে ভুলটা হয়, সেটা ভাষার নয় — গঠনের। বেশিরভাগ SOP শুরু হয় “Since my childhood I am fascinated by…” দিয়ে, আর যিনি পড়ছেন তিনি ওই এক লাইনেই বুঝে যান পরের অংশটুকুও অনুমান করা যাবে। তাই পাঁচটা অনুচ্ছেদে ভাগ করে নাও। প্রথম অনুচ্ছেদ: একটা নির্দিষ্ট সমস্যা বা প্রশ্ন, যেটা তোমাকে টানে — ছোটবেলার গল্প নয়, বরং সাম্প্রতিক কোনো কাজ থেকে আসা প্রশ্ন। “ফাইনাল ইয়ারে বাংলা ভাষার চার হাজার ক্লিপের একটা ডেটাসেট বানাতে গিয়ে দেখলাম, কম-সম্পদের ভাষার জন্য কত কম কিছু আছে।” এক লাইনেই বোঝা যায় তুমি কাজ করেছ। দ্বিতীয় অনুচ্ছেদ: একাডেমিক প্রস্তুতি — কোন ডিগ্রি, কোথা থেকে, আর একটাই নির্দিষ্ট কাজ (থিসিস, প্রজেক্ট, ল্যাব) একটু বিস্তারিত। ট্রান্সক্রিপ্টে যা লেখা আছে তা আবার লিখো না; কমিটির কাছে ট্রান্সক্রিপ্ট আছে। তৃতীয় অনুচ্ছেদ: কাজের অভিজ্ঞতা — চাকরি, ইন্টার্নশিপ, টিউশন, ফ্রিল্যান্স, নিজের বানানো কোনো টুল। ছোট কাজ হলেও ক্ষতি নেই, যদি সেখান থেকে শেখা জিনিসটা বলতে পারো। চতুর্থ অনুচ্ছেদ, আর এটাই সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ: ঠিক এই বিভাগটাই কেন? এখানে দুটো নির্দিষ্ট জিনিস থাকতে হবে — একজন শিক্ষকের নাম আর তাঁর কাজ, অথবা একটা ল্যাব বা কোর্স, আর তার সঙ্গে তোমার নিজের কাজের যোগ। এই অনুচ্ছেদটা প্রতিটি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের জন্য নতুন করে লিখতে হয়; বাকি চারটা এক রেখে শুধু এটাই বদলাতে হবে। পঞ্চম অনুচ্ছেদ: ডিগ্রির পরে কী — এক-দুই বাক্য, নির্দিষ্ট করে। “দেশের সেবা করতে চাই” লিখলে কমিটি কিছুই কল্পনা করতে পারে না; “দেশে ফিরে যমুনা অববাহিকার বন্যা-পূর্বাভাস নিয়ে কাজ করতে চাই” লিখলে পারে। কয়েকটা ছোট নিয়ম মনে রাখো: ফরমে শব্দসীমা দেওয়া থাকলে সেটাই চূড়ান্ত, না থাকলে এক পৃষ্ঠা যথেষ্ট। কবিতা বা উদ্ধৃতি দিয়ে শুরু করলে প্রথম লাইনটা অন্যের কথায় খরচ হয়ে যায়। “esteemed university”, “very much passionate” — বাংলা আনুষ্ঠানিক চিঠির অভ্যাস থেকে আসা এই শব্দগুলো বাদ দাও। আর পাঠানোর আগে ফাইলটা খুঁজে দেখো আগের বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নাম রয়ে গেছে কি না — এই একটা ভুলেই একটা আবেদন শেষ হয়ে যায়।

- Weak: Since my childhood I am fascinated by bridges. → Strong: I have been fascinated by bridges since childhood, and in 2023 I surveyed four Bailey bridges in Sylhet for my department.ছোটবেলার কথাই যদি বলতে হয়, টেন্স ঠিক করো আর সঙ্গে একটা প্রমাণ জুড়ে দাও।

I have been fascinated by computers since childhood.
Bangla “ছোটবেলা থেকে আমি আগ্রহী” keeps the present tense for something that began earlier and still continues. English needs the present perfect with 'since'.
I have completed my BSc from BUET in 2023.
I completed my BSc at BUET in 2023.
A finished year cannot go with the present perfect, and a degree is taken 'at' an institution — or you 'graduated from' it.
Respected Sir/Madam, I am writing this SOP to inform you…
In my final year I built a Bangla speech dataset of 4,000 clips…
An SOP is an essay read by a committee, not a letter to one person, so it has no greeting. Starting with one wastes the line that decides whether the rest gets read carefully.
I want to serve my country through this degree.
I want to return to Bangladesh and work on flood forecasting for the Jamuna basin.
The feeling is real, but 'serve my country' gives the reader nothing to picture. Name the work, the place and the problem instead.
I am very much interested in your esteemed university.
I want to join this department because its river-engineering group works on the problem my thesis ran into.
'Esteemed' and 'very much interested' are courtesy formulas carried over from formal Bangla letters. Praise of the university tells the committee nothing they do not already believe.
I am eager to join the University of Alberta. (in the file sent to Dalhousie)
I am eager to join Dalhousie University.
Reusing your own SOP is normal and sensible; leaving the previous university's name inside it is the one mistake that ends an application. Search the file for the old name before you attach it.

- If the form gives a word limit, that limit is the answer. If it gives none, one page is enough. — ফরমে শব্দসীমা থাকলে সেটাই চূড়ান্ত। না থাকলে এক পৃষ্ঠাই যথেষ্ট।
- Rewrite the 'why this department' paragraph for every university; keep the other four. — “কেন এই বিভাগ” অনুচ্ছেদটা প্রতিটি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের জন্য নতুন করে লেখো; বাকি চারটা একই থাকবে।
- Replace every adjective about yourself with something you did. One project beats ten adjectives. — নিজের সম্পর্কে প্রতিটা বিশেষণের জায়গায় একটা করে কাজ বসাও। একটা প্রজেক্ট দশটা বিশেষণের চেয়ে ভারী।
- Do not repeat your CGPA or your course list — the transcript is already in the file. — সিজিপিএ বা কোর্সের তালিকা আবার লিখো না — ট্রান্সক্রিপ্ট তো ফাইলেই আছে।
- Read it aloud to someone outside your subject. If they cannot say what you want to study, rewrite the first paragraph. — তোমার বিষয়ের বাইরের কাউকে পড়ে শোনাও। তিনি যদি বলতে না পারেন তুমি কী পড়তে চাও, প্রথম অনুচ্ছেদটা আবার লেখো।

How long should a statement of purpose be?
If the application form gives a word limit, that limit is the answer and going over it is a risk you gain nothing from. If no limit is given, one page — roughly 500 to 700 words — is enough for the five paragraphs described here.
Is an SOP the same as a cover letter?
No. A cover letter applies for a job, is addressed to a person, and starts with 'Dear…'. An SOP applies for a course, is read by a committee, and starts straight into your own writing with no greeting and no signature.
Can I use the same SOP for several universities?
The paragraphs on your background, your work and your goal travel unchanged. The paragraph on why you want that department cannot, because it has to name people, labs or courses that exist there. Change it, then search the file for the previous university's name.
Should I mention my CGPA?
It is already on your transcript, so repeating it adds nothing. Mention a number only when it explains something the transcript cannot — a low semester during an illness, or a subject in which you stood first.
Can I start with a quotation?
You can, but it spends your strongest line on somebody else's words. A sentence about something you actually did is harder to write and much harder to forget.
