In Bangla you খোলো a light, a fan, a tap, a television and a door with the same verb. English does not: you turn on a light, turn on a tap and switch on a television, and you open only things that have a lid, a door, a cover or a seal. 'Open the light' is instantly understood inside Bangladesh and instantly noticed outside it — and it takes about five minutes to fix.

Use 'turn on' or 'switch on' for anything worked by a switch, a knob or a tap — lights, fans, air conditioners, televisions, computers, gas, water. Use 'open' for something with a lid, a door, a cover or a seal — a door, a window, a bottle, a box, a book, a shop, a bank account. The opposites are 'turn off' and 'switch off' on one side, and 'close' on the other.

সমস্যাটা আপনার ইংরেজির নয়, বাংলার — আমাদের 'খোলা' আর 'বন্ধ করা' জোড়াটা এত কাজে লাগে যে একটা দিয়েই সব চলে যায়: লাইট খোলো, কল খোলো, দরজা খোলো, টিভি খোলো, দোকান খোলো, বোতল খোলো। ইংরেজি এই কাজগুলোকে দুই ভাগে ভাগ করেছে। প্রথম ভাগ — যেগুলোতে সুইচ, নব বা কল ঘোরাতে হয়, অর্থাৎ কারেন্ট, গ্যাস বা পানির প্রবাহ চালু-বন্ধ করা: turn on / turn off, অথবা switch on / switch off। লাইট, ফ্যান, এসি, টিভি, রেডিও, কম্পিউটার, মোবাইল, পানির কল, গ্যাসের চুলা — সবই এই দলে। দ্বিতীয় ভাগ — যেগুলোর সত্যিকারের ঢাকনা বা দরজা আছে: open / close বা shut। দরজা, জানালা, গেট, বোতল, জার, টিফিন বাক্স, খাম, বই, ছাতা — এগুলো open হয়। এখন কয়েকটা দরকারি খুঁটিনাটি। এক, 'off the light' কথাটা বাংলাদেশে খুব চলে, কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে off একা verb নয় — সামনে turn বা switch লাগবেই: 'Turn off the light' ✓, 'Off the light' ✗। দুই, সর্বনাম থাকলে মাঝখানে বসবে: 'Turn it on' ✓, 'turn on it' ✗; 'Switch them off' ✓। তিন, সৎভাবে বলা দরকার — ব্রিটিশ ইংরেজিতে 'put on the light' আর 'put off the light' একদম চলে, তাই ওটা ভুল নয়; ভুল শুধু 'open the light'। চার, চাবি লাগে এমন জিনিসে আলাদা শব্দ: তালা বা দরজা বা ফোনের স্ক্রিন unlock / lock করতে হয়, open নয়। পাঁচ, কম্পিউটারের বেলায় turn on বা start করা যায়, আর বন্ধ করার সময় 'shut down' বলাই স্বাভাবিক। ছয়, তবু 'open' অনেক জায়গায় ঠিক, আর সেগুলো ভুলে যাবেন না: 'The shop opens at nine' (দোকান খোলে), 'I opened a bank account' (অ্যাকাউন্ট খুললাম), 'Open the app' (অ্যাপ খোলা), 'Open your book at page ten'। মনে রাখার প্রশ্নটা এক লাইনের: জিনিসটার কি সুইচ আছে, না ঢাকনা আছে? সুইচ হলে turn on, ঢাকনা হলে open।

Open the light, I cannot see anything.
Turn on the light, I cannot see anything.
Bangla uses খোলা both for uncovering something and for starting a flow of electricity, so the same verb is carried into English. English keeps 'open' for things that have a lid, a door or a cover, and a light has none.
Close the fan, it is cold now.
Turn off the fan, it is cold now.
The other half of the same বন্ধ করা problem. 'Close' works only on something that can be shut, like a door or a box.
Off the AC before you go out.
Turn off the AC before you go out.
'Off' is a particle, not a verb on its own in standard English, so it needs 'turn' or 'switch' in front of it. The short form is common in Bangladesh but is not understood as a command elsewhere.
Open the tap, I will wash my hands.
Turn on the tap, I will wash my hands.
A tap is worked by turning, not by lifting a lid, so it belongs to the turn on group along with the gas and the shower.
I opened my mobile and called him.
I switched on my phone and called him.
With a phone, 'open' would mean opening an app or the case. Starting it from off is switching it on; getting past the screen lock is unlocking it — three different actions with three different verbs.

Why do so many Bangladeshi speakers say 'open the light'?
Because Bangla uses খোলা for both meanings — uncovering something and starting the flow of electricity, gas or water. When there is one verb in your first language and two in the second, the sentence comes out with whichever English word you learned first, and for most people that word is 'open'. Nothing about the speaker's English level causes it; it is a direct translation, and once you notice it, it is easy to correct.
Is 'switch on' the same as 'turn on'?
For anything with a switch they mean the same thing, and you can use either: switch on the light, turn on the light. 'Turn on' is the wider of the two, because it also works for taps, gas and water, where there is no switch to press — 'turn on the tap' is normal, 'switch on the tap' is not. If you want one phrase for everything, use turn on.
Is 'put on the light' wrong?
No. 'Put on the light' and 'put off the light' are ordinary British English and you will hear them from native speakers. The mistake this page is about is only 'open' and 'close' with electrical things. So you have three safe choices for a light — turn it on, switch it on, or put it on — and one that does not exist in English.
So when is 'open' correct?
Whenever something is uncovered, unsealed or made available: open a door, a window, an envelope, a bottle, a box, a book, an umbrella. It is also correct in several fixed uses that have nothing to do with lids — a shop opens at nine, you open a bank account, you open an app on your phone, and a company opens a new branch. Those are all good English and worth keeping.
