“They turned me down.” Every job application that ends in silence or a polite refusal ends in that sentence, and turn down is one of the few phrasal verbs with two meanings that never get confused: you turn down the volume, and you turn down an offer. One is a dial, the other is a decision, and English keeps both in the same two words without any trouble at all.

“Turn” phrasal verbs come in opposite pairs — turn on / turn off for switches, turn up / turn down for volume — plus a second set about outcomes: turn up (arrive), turn out (prove to be), turn into (become) and turn down (reject).
“Turn”-এর phrasal verb আসে বিপরীত জোড়ায় — সুইচের জন্য turn on / turn off, আওয়াজের জন্য turn up / turn down — আর তার সাথে ফলাফল নিয়ে আরেকটা দল: turn up (এসে হাজির হওয়া), turn out (শেষমেশ যা দাঁড়ায়), turn into (হয়ে যাওয়া) আর turn down (প্রত্যাখ্যান করা)।

অর্থগুলো: “turn on” = চালু করা; “turn off” = বন্ধ করা; “turn up” = আওয়াজ বাড়ানো, আবার এসে হাজির হওয়া; “turn down” = আওয়াজ কমানো, আবার প্রস্তাব ফিরিয়ে দেওয়া; “turn into” = রূপান্তরিত হওয়া; “turn out” = শেষ পর্যন্ত যা প্রমাণিত হয়; “turn back” = ফিরে যাওয়া; “turn over” = উল্টে দেওয়া; “turn in” = জমা দেওয়া, আবার ঘুমাতে যাওয়া; “turn to somebody” = কারও কাছে সাহায্য চাইতে যাওয়া; “turn around” = ঘুরে দাঁড়ানো, বা অবস্থার উন্নতি ঘটানো। ফাঁদ দুটো। এক, সর্বনামের জায়গা: turn on, turn off, turn up আর turn down separable, তাই সাধারণ noun দুই জায়গাতেই বসে — “turn off the TV” বা “turn the TV off” — কিন্তু সর্বনাম হলে মাঝখানেই বসবে: “Turn it off” ✓, “turn off it” ✗। দুই, into আর to: পুরোপুরি রূপ বদলে গেলে into — “The caterpillar turned into a butterfly”, “The water turned into ice”; আর to বসে যখন কারও দিকে ফেরার কথা — “She turned to her sister for help”। আর বাংলার “খোলা” এখানেও টানে — পাখা, বাতি বা টিভি open করা হয় না, turn on করা হয়; open কেবল দরজা, জানালা, বাক্স আর দোকানের জন্য। আর দুটো ব্যবহার আছে যেগুলো ফলাফলের কথা বলতে সবচেয়ে বেশি লাগে। “Turn out” হলো “শেষ পর্যন্ত দেখা গেল” বলার ইংরেজি, আর এর গড়নটা বাঁধা: “The exam turned out to be easier than we expected”, “It turned out that he had never applied at all.” গল্প বলার সময় বা কোনো ঘটনার শেষ বলার সময় এই বাক্যাংশটা ছাড়া চলে না, আর IELTS Speaking-এর part 2-এ এটা খুব কাজে দেয়। “Turn up” মানে এসে হাজির হওয়া, প্রায়ই অপ্রত্যাশিতভাবে বা কম সংখ্যায়: “Only five people turned up for the meeting.” আর “turn down” প্রত্যাখ্যানের অর্থে দুই দিকেই চলে — আপনি প্রস্তাব turn down করতে পারেন, আবার আপনাকেও turn down করা হতে পারে। চাকরির কথা ইংরেজিতে বলার সময় এই তফাতটা রাখুন: “I turned down the offer” মানে আপনি ফিরিয়ে দিয়েছেন, আর “I was turned down” মানে তারা আপনাকে নেয়নি — একই দুই শব্দ, দুই রকম গল্প।

In Bangla we say 'ফ্যান খোলা', but English devices are 'turned on', not 'opened' — a literal-translation error.
