Phrasal Verbs with Look
Phrasal Verbs with Look (Look দিয়ে গঠিত Phrasal Verb)
Introductionভূমিকা
“I look forward to hear from you.” It is the last line of thousands of job applications sent from Bangladesh every week, and it is wrong by one letter's worth of grammar. In “look forward to”, the “to” is a preposition, not the start of an infinitive — so a verb after it must take -ing: I look forward to hearing from you. Nothing else on this page will earn you as much as fixing that one line.
“I look forward to hear from you.” — বাংলাদেশ থেকে প্রতি সপ্তাহে পাঠানো হাজার হাজার চাকরির দরখাস্তের শেষ লাইনটা এটাই, আর এটা ব্যাকরণের হিসেবে ভুল। “Look forward to”-এর “to” একটা preposition, infinitive-এর শুরু নয় — তাই এর পরে verb বসলে সেটা -ing রূপ নেবে: I look forward to hearing from you। এই পাতার আর কিছুই এই একটা লাইন ঠিক করার সমান লাভ দেবে না।

Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
অর্থগুলো: “look for” = খোঁজা; “look after” = দেখাশোনা করা; “look into” = খতিয়ে দেখা, তদন্ত করা; “look up” = অভিধানে বা তালিকায় দেখে নেওয়া; “look forward to” = অধীর আগ্রহে অপেক্ষা করা; “look up to somebody” = কাউকে শ্রদ্ধা করা, আদর্শ মানা; “look down on somebody” = কাউকে ছোট করে দেখা; “look out” = সাবধান হওয়া; “look through” = দ্রুত চোখ বুলিয়ে নেওয়া; “look over” = পরীক্ষা করে দেখা; “look around” = ঘুরে দেখা। বাড়তি বা অনুপস্থিত preposition-ই এখানে আসল ফাঁদ। “Look for” — খোঁজার অর্থে for বাদ দেওয়া যায় না: “I'm looking for my keys” ✓, “looking my keys” ✗। কিন্তু “look after” সরাসরি object নেয়, তাই বাড়তি for বসে না: “look after the baby” ✓, “look after for the baby” ✗। “Look into” সরাসরি object নেয়। “Look up to” আর “look down on” — তিন শব্দের গোটা ক্রিয়া, ভাগ হয় না। আর একমাত্র separable-টা হলো look up অভিধানের অর্থে: “look up the word” বা “look the word up”, আর সর্বনাম হলে মাঝখানে — “look it up” ✓, “look up it” ✗। খেয়াল করুন, একই শব্দজোড়া “look up to” কিন্তু ভাগ হয় না, কারণ ওটা আলাদা একটা ক্রিয়া। আর সেই -ing নিয়মটা আরেকবার, কারণ এটা কেবল look forward to-তেই নয়। ইংরেজিতে যেসব বাক্যাংশের শেষে preposition “to” থাকে, তাদের পরে সবসময় -ing বসে: look forward to hearing, be used to living, get used to waking, object to paying, in addition to working। উল্টোদিকে যেসব ক্রিয়ার পরে infinitive-এর to বসে, সেখানে মূল রূপ: want to go, decide to leave, hope to see। পার্থক্যটা বোঝার একটা সহজ পরীক্ষা আছে — “to”-এর জায়গায় একটা noun বসিয়ে দেখুন। “I look forward to your reply” বলা যায়, তাই ওই to একটা preposition, আর verb বসলে -ing হবে। “I want to your reply” বলা যায় না, তাই ওখানকার to infinitive-এর। এই একটা পরীক্ষা মনে রাখলে দরখাস্তের শেষ লাইনটা আর কোনোদিন ভুল হবে না।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What is the difference between 'look for' and 'look after'?
'Look for' means to search for something (I am looking for my keys). 'Look after' means to take care of someone or something (She looks after the children). They share the verb 'look' but the meanings are unrelated.
Why do we say 'look forward to meeting' and not 'to meet'?
In 'look forward to', the word 'to' is a preposition, not part of an infinitive. A verb after a preposition takes the -ing form, so the correct phrase is 'look forward to meeting you'.
Are phrasal verbs with 'look' formal or informal?
Most are neutral and used in both speech and writing. 'Look into' and 'look after' are perfectly acceptable in formal emails, while 'look out' is more common in casual speech.
