Introductionভূমিকা

Bangla marks time with a single ending: সোমবারে, সকালে, জুনে, নয়টায় — one -এ for the day, the part of day, the month and the hour. English spends three different prepositions on the same job, and the choice is fixed: at for clock times, on for days and dates, in for months, years and parts of the day. That is why “I will meet you in Monday” happens, and it is why fixing these three words repairs more sentences than any other single rule.

বাংলা সময় বোঝায় একটাই বিভক্তি দিয়ে: সোমবারে, সকালে, জুনে, নয়টায় — দিন, দিনের ভাগ, মাস আর ঘণ্টা, সবার জন্য একটাই “-এ”। ইংরেজি একই কাজে তিনটে আলাদা preposition খরচ করে, আর বাছাইটা নির্দিষ্ট: ঘড়ির সময়ে at, দিন ও তারিখে on, মাস-বছর-দিনের ভাগে in। এই কারণেই “I will meet you in Monday” বেরিয়ে আসে, আর এই কারণেই এই তিনটে শব্দ ঠিক করলে অন্য যেকোনো একটা নিয়মের চেয়ে বেশি বাক্য সোজা হয়ে যায়।

Time vocabulary has three parts: telling the clock (o'clock, half past, quarter to, a.m., p.m.), naming the calendar (days, months, dates, ordinal numbers) and the three prepositions that connect them to a sentence — at, on and in.

তিনটে preposition-এর ভাগটা একবারে মুখস্থ করে ফেলুন, কারণ এখানে যুক্তি খুঁজে লাভ নেই। AT বসে ঘড়ির নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে: at nine o'clock, at half past six, at noon, at midnight, at night। ON বসে দিন আর তারিখে: on Monday, on Friday morning, on the fifth of April, on my birthday, on Eid day। IN বসে মাস, বছর, ঋতু আর দিনের ভাগে: in June, in 2026, in winter, in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening। খেয়াল করুন দুটো ব্যতিক্রম — “at night” (in নয়), আর দিনের ভাগের সাথে বার জুড়ে দিলে on-এ বদলে যায়: “in the morning” কিন্তু “on Monday morning”। আর নির্দিষ্ট শব্দগুলোর আগে কোনো preposition বসে না: this morning, last night, next week, tomorrow, yesterday, every Friday — “in last week” বা “on tomorrow” লিখবেন না। ঘড়ির সময় বলার দুটো পদ্ধতি জানুন, আর সহজটা দিয়ে শুরু করুন। সহজ পদ্ধতি — সংখ্যা পরপর: 6:30 = “six thirty”, 9:15 = “nine fifteen”, 10:45 = “ten forty-five”। ঐতিহ্যবাহী পদ্ধতি — ঘণ্টার সাথে সম্পর্ক ধরে: 6:30 = “half past six”, 9:15 = “a quarter past nine”, 10:45 = “a quarter to eleven” (পরের ঘণ্টা, খেয়াল রাখবেন), 7:20 = “twenty past seven”, 7:50 = “ten to eight”। “O'clock” বসে কেবল কাঁটায় কাঁটায় ঘণ্টায় — “It is nine o'clock” ✓, “It is nine thirty o'clock” ✗, আর “nine clock” বলে কিছু নেই, apostrophe সহ o'clock। সকাল-বিকেলের জন্য a.m. (রাত ১২টা থেকে দুপুর ১২টা) আর p.m. (দুপুর ১২টা থেকে রাত ১২টা)। আর তারিখ লেখার নিয়মটা শিখে রাখুন, কারণ ভিসার ফরম, চাকরির দরখাস্ত আর বিদেশি ওয়েবসাইটে এটা ভুল হলে সত্যিকারের ঝামেলা হয়। বলার সময় ক্রমবাচক সংখ্যা বসে: “the fifth of April” বা “April the fifth” — “on 5 april” নয়, আর মাসের নাম সবসময় বড় হাতের অক্ষরে শুরু হয় (April, June), ঠিক যেমন বারের নাম (Monday, Friday)। লেখার সময় বাংলাদেশ ও ব্রিটেন ব্যবহার করে দিন-মাস-বছর: 05/04/2026 মানে ৫ এপ্রিল। কিন্তু আমেরিকা ব্যবহার করে মাস-দিন-বছর: একই 05/04/2026 সেখানে মানে ৫ মে। এই একটা তফাতেই ফ্লাইট আর অ্যাপয়েন্টমেন্ট গুলিয়ে যায়, তাই আন্তর্জাতিক ফরমে সবসময় মাসের নাম লিখে দিন — “5 April 2026” — তাহলে কোনো ভুল বোঝাবুঝির জায়গা থাকে না। আর ক্রমবাচক সংখ্যাগুলোর লেজ মনে রাখুন: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th… 11th, 12th, 13th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 31st।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • I will meet you in Monday.

    I will meet you on Monday.

    Use 'on' with days and dates, not 'in'. 'in' is for months and years (in April, in 2026).

  • The meeting is at the morning.

    The meeting is in the morning.

    Use 'in the morning/afternoon/evening', but 'at night' and 'at' a clock time.

  • My birthday is on 5 april.

    My birthday is on the 5th of April.

    Dates use an ordinal number (5th) and days/months start with a capital letter.

  • It is nine clock.

    It is nine o'clock.

    The fixed phrase is 'o'clock' (short for 'of the clock'), only for whole hours.
