Introductionভূমিকা

After paying at Agora or Shwapno we ask for the “bill”, and in English that is the one word that does not fit. A bill is what you still owe — the restaurant brings you a bill, the electricity company sends you a bill. The slip they hand you after you have paid is a receipt. It is a small word, but it is the word you need when something has to be returned, and it is the word printed on every refund policy in the world.

আগোরা বা স্বপ্নে টাকা দেওয়ার পর আমরা চাই “বিল”, আর ইংরেজিতে ঠিক ওই শব্দটাই খাপ খায় না। Bill মানে যেটা এখনো দিতে হবে — রেস্টুরেন্ট আপনাকে bill দেয়, বিদ্যুৎ অফিস bill পাঠায়। টাকা দেওয়ার পর হাতে যে কাগজটা ধরিয়ে দেয়, তার নাম receipt। শব্দটা ছোট, কিন্তু কোনো জিনিস ফেরত দিতে হলে ওই শব্দটাই লাগে, আর পৃথিবীর প্রতিটা রিফান্ড নীতিতে ওই শব্দটাই ছাপা থাকে।

Supermarket vocabulary is easiest to learn as a walk through the shop: trolley, aisle, shelf, label, expiry date, queue, checkout, cashier, receipt, carrier bag. Learn it in that order and you are learning it in the order you will actually need it.

সুপারমার্কেটের শব্দ শেখার সবচেয়ে সহজ উপায় দোকানটার ভেতর দিয়ে একবার হেঁটে যাওয়া: trolley, aisle, shelf, label, expiry date, queue, checkout, cashier, receipt, carrier bag। এই ক্রমে শিখলে যে ক্রমে দরকার হবে, ঠিক সেই ক্রমেই শেখা হয়ে যাবে।

দোকানে ঢোকা থেকে বেরোনো পর্যন্ত শব্দগুলো ক্রম ধরে সাজিয়ে নিন। ঢুকেই ঠেলাগাড়ি — trolley (ব্রিটিশ) বা cart (আমেরিকান); ছোট ঝুড়ি basket। তাকের সারির মাঝের পথটার নাম aisle, আর এর উচ্চারণ “আইল” — s অক্ষরটা চুপ। তাক shelf, একাধিক হলে shelves; ওপরের তাক the top shelf, নিচেরটা the bottom shelf। জিনিসের গায়ের কাগজ label, দাম price tag, মেয়াদ expiry date বা best before, ওজন net weight, বাড়তি সুবিধা “buy one get one free”। টাকা দেওয়ার জায়গা checkout, যিনি বসে থাকেন cashier, লাইন queue (ব্রিটিশ) বা line (আমেরিকান) — “There was a long queue at the checkout”। বেরোনোর সময় carrier bag বা shopping bag, আর হাতে receipt। গোনার হিসাবটা এখানে বারবার লাগে, তাই একবারে পরিষ্কার করে নিন। Countable জিনিসে how many আর a few: how many apples, a few eggs, three bananas। Uncountable জিনিসে how much আর a little: how much rice, a little oil, some sugar, some flour। দাম জিজ্ঞেস করতেও how much — “How much is this?”। আর uncountable জিনিস গুনতে হলে মাপের শব্দ বসান, ঠিক যেভাবে বাংলায় বলি: a kilo of rice, a litre of oil, a packet of biscuits, a bottle of water, a dozen eggs, a bar of soap, a tube of toothpaste, a bag of flour। বাংলায় “দুইটা চাল” বলা যায় না, ইংরেজিতেও “two rices” হয় না — এই জায়গায় দুই ভাষার নিয়ম আসলে একই, শুধু মাপের শব্দগুলো আলাদা। আর কয়েকটা বাক্য তৈরি রাখুন, কারণ সুপারমার্কেটে কথাগুলো সবসময় একই: “Excuse me, which aisle has the cooking oil?” “Do you have any smaller packets?” “Is this the queue for the checkout?” “Sorry, I don't need a bag.” “Could I have the receipt, please?” “I think this has been scanned twice.” উচ্চারণে দুটো জায়গায় সাবধান — aisle-এ s চুপ, আর receipt-এ p চুপ, উচ্চারণ “রিসিট”। শেষে একটা কথা শব্দের ব্যবহার নিয়ে: groceries মানে বাজার করা খাদ্যসামগ্রী, আর এটা সবসময় বহুবচনে চলে — “I bought some groceries” বা “I did the grocery shopping”, কিন্তু “many groceries” শুনতে বেখাপ্পা। আর মাসের বাজারকে ইংরেজিতে বলে “the monthly shop” বা “a big grocery run” — বাংলায় যেটাকে আমরা “মাসের বাজার” বলি।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • I bought many groceries.

    I bought a lot of groceries. / I did a big grocery shop.

    'Groceries' is usually treated as a general amount; 'a lot of groceries' sounds far more natural than 'many groceries'.

  • How much apples do you want?

    How many apples do you want?

    Use 'how many' for things you can count (apples, eggs) and 'how much' for uncountable things (rice, water, money).

  • Please give me the bill for this receipt.

    Please give me the receipt.

    In a supermarket the printed proof of payment is the 'receipt'; 'bill' is more common in a restaurant.

  • I paid in the cashier.

    I paid at the checkout / to the cashier.

    You pay 'at the checkout' or 'to the cashier'. 'In the cashier' is not correct.

  • Watch the silent letters: 'aisle' sounds like 'I-l' and 'receipt' sounds like 'ri-SEET' (the p is silent). — নীরব অক্ষরে খেয়াল রাখুন: 'aisle' শোনায় 'আইল', আর 'receipt' শোনায় 'রিসিট' (p নীরব)।
