Shopping for food is something we all do every week. Knowing the English words for a supermarket — the trolley, the aisles, the checkout — helps you find what you need, ask staff for help and understand your receipt.

সুপারমার্কেটে ঢুকলেই আপনি একটা 'trolley' (ঠেলাগাড়ি) বা 'basket' (ঝুড়ি) নেন। দোকানের ভেতরের লম্বা পথগুলোকে বলে 'aisle' (উচ্চারণ: আইল, 's' নীরব), আর জিনিস রাখা তাকগুলোকে বলে 'shelf'। যেখানে টাকা দেন, সেটা 'checkout' বা 'till', আর যিনি টাকা নেন তিনি 'cashier' (ক্যাশিয়ার)। কেনা সব জিনিসকে একসাথে বলে 'groceries' (মুদি জিনিস)। টাকা দেওয়ার পর যে কাগজে দাম লেখা থাকে সেটা 'receipt' (উচ্চারণ: রিসিট, 'p' নীরব)। মনে রাখবেন — 'How much is this?' মানে দাম জিজ্ঞাসা, আর 'How many do you want?' মানে সংখ্যা জিজ্ঞাসা।

I bought a lot of groceries. / I did a big grocery shop.
'Groceries' is usually treated as a general amount; 'a lot of groceries' sounds far more natural than 'many groceries'.

Use 'how many' for things you can count (apples, eggs) and 'how much' for uncountable things (rice, water, money).
Please give me the bill for this receipt.

In a supermarket the printed proof of payment is the 'receipt'; 'bill' is more common in a restaurant.
I paid in the cashier.
I paid at the checkout / to the cashier.
You pay 'at the checkout' or 'to the cashier'. 'In the cashier' is not correct.

- Watch the silent letters: 'aisle' sounds like 'I-l' and 'receipt' sounds like 'ri-SEET' (the p is silent). — নীরব অক্ষরে খেয়াল রাখুন: 'aisle' শোনায় 'আইল', আর 'receipt' শোনায় 'রিসিট' (p নীরব)।

What is the difference between a trolley and a basket?
A trolley (or 'cart' in American English) is the large cart on wheels you push for a big shop. A basket is the small container you carry by hand when you only need a few things.
Is it 'receipt' or 'bill' at the supermarket?
At a supermarket, the printed proof of what you paid is a 'receipt'. The word 'bill' is more common in restaurants (UK) or for regular payments like an electricity bill. In American English the receipt is sometimes just called the 'check' in a restaurant.
When do I use 'how much' and when 'how many'?
