Introductionভূমিকা

Every Bangladeshi student owns a “copy”, buys a new “copy” before every term, and writes the day's notes in the “copy”. In English that object is a notebook or an exercise book; a copy is a duplicate of something. It is one of the handful of school words we inherited and kept, and it turns up in exam scripts and in emails to foreign teachers, where nobody can guess what is meant.

বাংলাদেশের প্রতিটি ছাত্রের একটা “copy” আছে, প্রতি টার্মের আগে নতুন “copy” কেনা হয়, আর দিনের নোট লেখা হয় ওই “copy”-তেই। ইংরেজিতে জিনিসটার নাম notebook বা exercise book; copy মানে কোনো কিছুর নকল বা প্রতিলিপি। স্কুলের যে কয়েকটা শব্দ আমরা উত্তরাধিকারে পেয়ে রেখে দিয়েছি, এটা তার একটা — আর সেটা পরীক্ষার খাতায় আর বিদেশি শিক্ষককে লেখা ইমেইলে গিয়ে ওঠে, যেখানে কেউ আন্দাজই করতে পারে না কী বোঝানো হচ্ছে।

Classroom vocabulary has two halves: the objects (board, chalk, marker, desk, notebook, eraser, textbook) and the instructions teachers repeat every single day (open your book, raise your hand, take notes, hand in your papers). The second half is the more useful one, because you hear it dozens of times a week.

শ্রেণিকক্ষের শব্দ দুই ভাগে: জিনিসপত্র (board, chalk, marker, desk, notebook, eraser, textbook) আর শিক্ষকের প্রতিদিন বলা নির্দেশ (open your book, raise your hand, take notes, hand in your papers)। দ্বিতীয় ভাগটাই বেশি কাজের, কারণ ওগুলো সপ্তাহে ডজনখানেক বার কানে আসে।

কয়েকটা শব্দ এখানে চালু, অথচ ইংরেজিতে অন্য কিছু বোঝায় — এগুলো আগে ঠিক করে নিন। “Copy” নয়, notebook বা exercise book। “Rubber” শব্দটা ব্রিটিশ ইংরেজিতে ইরেজার বোঝালেও আমেরিকান ইংরেজিতে সম্পূর্ণ অন্য জিনিস বোঝায়, তাই সবখানে নিরাপদ শব্দ eraser। “Cutting” নয়, sharpener (পেন্সিল কাটার যন্ত্র)। “Class capture” বা “class captain” যা-ই বলা হোক, ইংরেজিতে চলতি শব্দ class monitor বা class representative। বোর্ডের বেলায় পুরোনো কালো বোর্ড blackboard, সাদাটা whiteboard, আর সাধারণভাবে বলতে চাইলে শুধু the board — “Write it on the board”। এবার সেই দুই জোড়া, যেগুলো বাংলা থেকে সবচেয়ে বেশি উল্টে যায়। Teach আর learn: teach মানে শেখানো, learn মানে শেখা। বাংলায় “স্যার আমাদের ইংরেজি শেখান” আর “আমি ইংরেজি শিখি” — দুটোতেই “শিখ” মূলটা আছে বলে ইংরেজিতে “The teacher learns us English” বেরিয়ে আসে। শিক্ষক teach করেন, ছাত্র learn করে; মাঝে কোনো বিকল্প নেই। দ্বিতীয় জোড়া lend আর borrow: lend মানে ধার দেওয়া, borrow মানে ধার নেওয়া। তাই বন্ধুর ইরেজার চাইতে হলে “Can I borrow your eraser?” — “Can I lend your eraser?” মানে দাঁড়ায় আপনি তাকে তার নিজের জিনিস ধার দিতে চাইছেন। মনে রাখার সহজ সূত্র: lend-এর ভেতরে দেওয়া, borrow-এর ভেতরে নেওয়া। আর শিক্ষকের মুখের বাক্যগুলো গোটা অবস্থায় মুখস্থ করে ফেলুন, কারণ প্রতিদিন একই ভাবেই বলা হয়: “Open your books to page ten.” “Turn to the next page.” “Raise your hand if you have a question.” “Copy this down.” “Take notes.” “Hand in your assignments.” “Work in pairs.” “Any questions so far?” এগুলো শব্দের তালিকা নয়, তৈরি বাক্য — শোনামাত্র বোঝার জন্য এদের চেনা থাকা দরকার, আর ইংরেজি মাধ্যমের ক্লাসে বা অনলাইন কোর্সে ঠিক এই বাক্যগুলোই শুনবেন। নিজের দিক থেকে যে তিনটে বাক্য সবচেয়ে বেশি লাগবে সেগুলোও শিখে রাখুন: “Excuse me, could you repeat that, please?”, “Sorry, I didn't catch the last part.”, “May I go out for a minute?” অনুবাদ করে বলার চেয়ে তৈরি বাক্য মুখে আসা অনেক দ্রুত, আর ক্লাসে দ্রুততাই আসল।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

The teacher learns us English.
The teacher teaches us English.
'Teach' means to give knowledge; 'learn' means to receive it. The teacher teaches; the student learns.
Can I lend your rubber?
Can I borrow your eraser?
You 'borrow' from someone (you take it); they 'lend' to you (they give it). Also, in exams 'eraser' is the safer word.
Write it in the copy.
Write it in the notebook / exercise book.
'Copy' for a notebook is local usage; standard English is 'notebook' or 'exercise book'.
