English Vocabulary for the City
শহর নিয়ে ইংরেজি শব্দভাণ্ডার
Introductionভূমিকা
Bangla gets by with one word, শহর, for a place of fifty thousand people and for a place of twenty million. English insists on the difference: Dhaka is a city, Jashore is a town, and calling Dhaka a town makes an English reader picture a market square and two traffic lights. The same one-to-many split runs through the whole of city vocabulary — রাস্তা alone has to cover road, street, lane and alley — which is why describing your own city in English is harder than it looks.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
City vocabulary falls into four groups: what you live in (flat, apartment block, neighbourhood, suburb), what you walk and drive on (road, street, lane, pavement, flyover, intersection), what you use (market, hospital, post office, park) and what you complain about (traffic, rush hour, noise, pollution). The last group is the one you will need most in real conversation.
শহরের শব্দ চার ভাগে পড়ে: কোথায় থাকেন (flat, apartment block, neighbourhood, suburb), কীসের ওপর হাঁটেন-চলেন (road, street, lane, pavement, flyover, intersection), কী ব্যবহার করেন (market, hospital, post office, park), আর কী নিয়ে অভিযোগ করেন (traffic, rush hour, noise, pollution)। বাস্তব কথাবার্তায় শেষ দলটাই সবচেয়ে বেশি লাগে।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
রাস্তার নামগুলো আগে ভাগ করে নিন, কারণ বাংলায় সবই “রাস্তা” বলে ইংরেজিতে গুলিয়ে যায়। Road মানে দুই জায়গার মধ্যে যাওয়ার পথ, শহরের বাইরেও থাকতে পারে (the Dhaka–Chattogram highway is a road)। Traffic শব্দটা uncountable — “many traffics” হয় না, হয় “heavy traffic”, “a lot of traffic”, আর যানজট বোঝাতে “a traffic jam” (এটা countable, তাই “a big traffic jam” ঠিক, “a big traffic” ভুল)। ব্যস্ত সময়কে বলে rush hour — “I left early to avoid the rush hour”। ফুটপাতের নাম ব্রিটিশ ইংরেজিতে pavement, আমেরিকান ইংরেজিতে sidewalk; বাংলাদেশে চলতি “footpath” শব্দটাও ইংরেজিতে আছে, তবে কম চলে। পথচারী pedestrian, জেব্রা ক্রসিং zebra crossing বা pedestrian crossing, মোড় intersection বা junction, গোল চত্বর roundabout। আর downtown শব্দটার আগে to বসে না — “I'm going downtown”, কারণ downtown এখানে ক্রিয়াবিশেষণের কাজ করছে। শেষে নিজের শহরের কথা ইংরেজিতে বলার কৌশল, কারণ IELTS speaking থেকে চাকরির ইন্টারভিউ — সবখানেই এই প্রশ্নটা আসে। তালিকা বানাবেন না; জায়গার সাথে জীবনটা জুড়ুন। “Dhaka is a crowded city. There are many buildings. There is much traffic.” — এই তিন বাক্যে কোনো ভুল নেই, তবু কিছুই বলা হয়নি। এর বদলে: “I live in Mirpur, in the north of Dhaka. It's crowded and noisy, but everything is within walking distance — the market, the clinic, my cousin's flat. The one thing I'd change is the traffic; a four-kilometre trip to Farmgate can take an hour in the rush hour.” তিনটে জিনিস খেয়াল করুন — জায়গার অবস্থান, একটা ভালো দিক, একটা খারাপ দিক। এই ছাঁচটা যেকোনো শহর, যেকোনো এলাকার জন্য খাটে, আর মুখস্থ বর্ণনার চেয়ে অনেক বেশি নম্বর আনে।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What is the difference between a city and a town?
A city is a large, important place with many people and tall buildings (like Dhaka or Chittagong). A town is smaller, and a village is smaller still.
Is it 'pavement' or 'sidewalk'?
Both mean the path beside the road for people on foot. 'Pavement' is British English and 'sidewalk' is American English — both are correct.
Can 'traffic' be plural?
No. 'Traffic' is an uncountable noun, so we never say 'traffics'. Use 'a lot of traffic' or 'heavy traffic' instead.
How can I remember city vocabulary quickly?
Group the words by topic — buildings, roads, transport and public places — and practise a few natural sentences with each group.
