Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Shopping vocabulary is the set of words and phrases used to buy things: price, discount, size, receipt, refund, and questions like 'How much is this?' or 'Can I try it on?'.
Shopping vocabulary হলো জিনিস কেনার জন্য ব্যবহৃত শব্দ ও বাক্যাংশের সমষ্টি: price (দাম), discount (ছাড়), size (মাপ), receipt (রশিদ), refund (ফেরত), এবং 'How much is this?' বা 'Can I try it on?'-এর মতো প্রশ্ন।
Bangla Explanation
কাজের প্রশ্ন: 'How much is this?' (এটার দাম কত?), 'Do you have a smaller size?' (ছোট সাইজ আছে?), 'Can I try it on?' (পরে দেখতে পারি?), 'Can you give a discount?' (একটু কমানো যায়?)। মনে রাখবেন — 'How much' দিয়ে দাম জিজ্ঞেস করি (uncountable), 'How many' দিয়ে সংখ্যা। ভদ্রভাবে চাইতে 'please' ও 'could' ব্যবহার করুন।
Examplesউদাহরণ

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
How many is this bag?
How much is this bag?
For price we ask 'How much…?'. 'How many' is only for counting number of items.
This is too much costly.
This is too expensive. / This costs too much.
'Costly' rarely takes 'too much'; the natural choice is 'too expensive'. 'Cost' is a verb here, not paired with 'much costly'.
Give me discount.
Could you give me a discount, please?
A bare command sounds rude; 'a discount' needs the article 'a', and 'could…please' makes it polite.
I want to return this and take my money.
I'd like to return this and get a refund.
The set phrase is 'get a refund'. 'Take my money' sounds unnatural in a shop.
Tipsটিপস
- Remember 'How much' for price and 'How many' for number — mixing them is the most common shopping error. — দামের জন্য 'How much' আর সংখ্যার জন্য 'How many' — এই দুটো গুলিয়ে ফেলা কেনাকাটায় সবচেয়ে সাধারণ ভুল।
- Keep a bargaining phrase ready: 'That's a bit much — can you do better?' works politely in most markets. — দরদামের একটি বাক্য তৈরি রাখুন: 'That's a bit much — can you do better?' বেশিরভাগ বাজারে ভদ্রভাবে কাজ করে।
- Learn size and colour words as pairs (small/large, tight/loose, light/dark) so you can describe exactly what you want. — সাইজ ও রঙের শব্দ জোড়ায় জোড়ায় শিখুন (small/large, tight/loose, light/dark) — তাহলে ঠিক কী চান তা বর্ণনা করতে পারবেন।
- Always ask for the 'receipt' — it is the word you need if you later want a 'refund' or 'exchange'. — সবসময় 'receipt' (রশিদ) চান — পরে 'refund' (ফেরত) বা 'exchange' (বদল) চাইলে এই শব্দটাই লাগবে।

How do I bargain politely in English?
Stay friendly and use soft phrases: 'That's a bit much — could you do a little better?' or 'Is there any discount?'. A smile and a polite tone work better than a flat demand.
What is the difference between 'How much' and 'How many' when shopping?
Use 'How much' for price and for uncountable things (How much is this? How much rice?). Use 'How many' to count items (How many mangoes? How many pieces?).
What should I say if I want to return something?
Say 'I'd like to return this and get a refund' or 'Can I exchange this?'. Keep your receipt, because the shop usually asks for it before giving a refund or exchange.
