English Vocabulary for Emotions and Feelings
আবেগ ও অনুভূতির ইংরেজি শব্দভাণ্ডার
Introductionভূমিকা
Bangla puts the feeling in charge and the person in the background: আমার ভয় লাগছে, আমার রাগ হচ্ছে, আমার আনন্দ হচ্ছে — the fear does the arriving, and you are only where it lands. English reverses it. You become the subject and the feeling becomes a description of you: I am afraid, I am angry, I am delighted. That reversal is why “I have angry with him” comes out — the Bangla sentence is trying to keep the emotion as a noun, and English will not let it.
বাংলায় অনুভূতিটাই কর্তা, মানুষটা পিছনে: আমার ভয় লাগছে, আমার রাগ হচ্ছে, আমার আনন্দ হচ্ছে — ভয়টা আসে, আর আপনি শুধু সেই জায়গা যেখানে সেটা এসে পড়ে। ইংরেজি ঠিক উল্টো করে। আপনি হয়ে যান কর্তা, আর অনুভূতিটা হয়ে যায় আপনার বর্ণনা: I am afraid, I am angry, I am delighted। এই উল্টে যাওয়ার কারণেই বেরিয়ে আসে “I have angry with him” — বাংলা বাক্যটা আবেগকে বিশেষ্য হিসেবেই ধরে রাখতে চাইছে, আর ইংরেজি সেটা হতে দিচ্ছে না।
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Emotion vocabulary works on three axes: which feeling (happy, angry, afraid, sad), how strong it is (pleased → delighted → thrilled), and which preposition it takes (angry with a person, angry about a thing, nervous about, proud of, grateful for). Getting all three right is what makes a sentence about feelings sound like a native one.
আবেগের শব্দভান্ডার চলে তিনটে অক্ষে: কোন অনুভূতি (happy, angry, afraid, sad), কতটা তীব্র (pleased → delighted → thrilled), আর কোন preposition নেয় (angry with কোনো মানুষের ওপর, angry about কোনো বিষয়ে, nervous about, proud of, grateful for)। তিনটেই ঠিক হলে অনুভূতির বাক্যটা নেটিভের মতো শোনায়।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
প্রথমে বাক্যের গড়ন। ইংরেজিতে প্রায় সব আবেগ বসে be বা feel-এর পরে বিশেষণ হিসেবে: I am nervous, I feel anxious, She was delighted, He seems upset। তাই “I have angry” নয়, “I am angry”; “I have fear” নয়, “I am afraid” বা “I'm scared”; “I have shame” নয়, “I'm embarrassed” বা “I'm ashamed”। অল্প কয়েকটা আবেগ ইংরেজিতেও বিশেষ্য হয়ে বসে, তখন have চলে: “I have a lot of respect for her”, “I have no interest in cricket”, “He has a fear of heights” — কিন্তু এগুলো ব্যতিক্রম, নিয়ম নয়। আর অনুভূতি কতক্ষণ ধরে চলছে বোঝাতে present perfect: “I've been feeling anxious all week.” দ্বিতীয়ত, তীব্রতার মই। ইংরেজিতে একই অনুভূতির দুর্বল আর তীব্র রূপ আলাদা শব্দ, আর তীব্র শব্দের সামনে very বসে না। খুশি: pleased → happy → delighted → thrilled → over the moon। রাগ: annoyed → angry → furious → livid। ভয়: uneasy → nervous → scared → terrified। দুঃখ: down → sad → upset → devastated। ক্লান্তি: tired → exhausted। বিস্ময়: surprised → astonished → stunned। তাই “very delighted” বা “very furious” বলবেন না — বলুন শুধু delighted, furious, নয়তো absolutely delighted। উল্টোদিকে অনুভূতি নরম করতে ছোট শব্দ বসান: a bit disappointed, a little nervous, slightly annoyed, quite upset। বাংলায় স্বরভঙ্গি দিয়ে যে নরম ভাবটা আসে, ইংরেজিতে সেটা আনতে হয় এই শব্দগুলো দিয়ে — না বসালে কথাটা যতটা কড়া ভেবেছিলেন, শুনতে তার চেয়ে অনেক বেশি কড়া লাগে। তৃতীয়ত, preposition-এর জোড়া — এগুলো বদলায় না, তাই শব্দের সাথেই মুখস্থ করে ফেলুন: angry with somebody কিন্তু angry about something, nervous about, worried about, anxious about, excited about, proud of, ashamed of, afraid of, jealous of, tired of, fond of, grateful for, sorry for/about, disappointed in somebody কিন্তু disappointed with something, satisfied with, pleased with, annoyed with। শেষে একটা জোড়া, যেটা নিয়ে বাংলাভাষীরা সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল করেন: -ing রূপটা কারণকে বোঝায়, -ed রূপটা যিনি অনুভব করছেন তাঁকে। The trip was exciting, so I was excited. The news was shocking, so we were shocked. The class was boring, so the students were bored. তাই “I am very exciting about the trip” বললে অর্থ দাঁড়ায় আপনি নিজেই রোমাঞ্চকর একটা জিনিস — বলুন “I am very excited about the trip”।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What is the difference between '-ed' and '-ing' feeling words?
The '-ed' form describes how a person feels (I am interested). The '-ing' form describes the thing that causes the feeling (The book is interesting).
Do I say 'I am' or 'I feel' with emotions?
Both are correct. 'I am nervous' and 'I feel nervous' mean almost the same thing. 'I feel' often sounds a little softer and more momentary.
Why is 'I have angry' wrong in English?
English uses the verb 'be' for emotions: 'I am angry', 'I am tired'. Bangla often uses হওয়া, but in English 'have' does not work with feeling adjectives.
