How to Interrupt Politely in English
Introduction
To cut into a conversation in English, apologise first and ask second: 'Sorry to interrupt — could I just add something here?' That one sentence works in a meeting, a class or a group of friends, and it is what keeps an interruption from sounding rude.
ইংরেজিতে কারো কথার মাঝে ঢুকতে হলে আগে দুঃখ প্রকাশ, পরে অনুমতি চাওয়া: 'Sorry to interrupt — could I just add something here?'
Definition
Interrupting politely means taking your turn to speak while the other person is still talking, in a way that shows you know you are doing it. The apology and the question are what carry the politeness.
Bangla Explanation
এক, ছোট একটা দুঃখ প্রকাশ: “Sorry to interrupt”, “Sorry, may I come in here?”, “Excuse me —”। দুই, অনুমতি চাওয়া প্রশ্ন: “Could I just add something?”, “Can I ask one quick question?”। ব্যাকরণের একটা ছোট জায়গায় প্রায়ই ভুল হয় — “Sorry to interrupt” আর “Sorry for interrupting” দুটোই ঠিক, কারণ to-এর পরে ক্রিয়ার মূল রূপ বসে আর for-এর পরে -ing রূপ; কিন্তু “Sorry for interrupt” হয় না, কারণ for একটি preposition, তার পরে verb-এর মূল রূপ বসতে পারে না। বদলে বলুন “Just a moment —” বা “Sorry, could I just say something?” আরেকটি শব্দ সাবধানে: আমরা প্রশ্ন বোঝাতে 'doubt' বলি (“I have one doubt”), কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে doubt মানে সন্দেহ — “I have a doubt about his figures” মানে আপনি তার হিসাবটাই বিশ্বাস করছেন না। প্রশ্ন থাকলে বলুন “I have a question.” কেউ আপনার কথার মাঝে ঢুকে পড়লে বলুন “Let me just finish this point” বা “If I could just finish —” — নিজের দরকারটা বলছেন, তার আচরণ নিয়ে অভিযোগ করছেন না; “Don't interrupt me” অভিযোগ, আর ওখান থেকেই কথা তিক্ত হয়। আর কথা শেষ হয়ে গেলে বিষয়টা ফিরিয়ে আনুন: “Anyway, coming back to the budget…” বা “As I was saying…”। অন্যের বাক্য শেষ হওয়ার এক-দুই সেকেন্ডের ফাঁকটা ধরতে পারলে আর কিছু লাগে না — “Can I add something here?”

Common Mistakes
Sorry for interrupt.
Sorry to interrupt. / Sorry for interrupting.
After 'to' English uses the base verb (to interrupt); after the preposition 'for' it needs the -ing form (for interrupting). Both full versions are correct — the half version is not.
One minute! Listen, listen.
Just a moment — could I say something?
'এক মিনিট, শোনেন' is normal in Bangla, but in English an imperative like 'listen' orders the other person to stop. English asks for the turn instead of taking it.
Excuse me, I have one doubt.
Excuse me, I have a question.
In English 'doubt' means you do not believe something. Saying 'I have a doubt about your report' tells the speaker you suspect the report is wrong.
Please don't interrupt me.
Let me just finish this point.
The first names the other person's behaviour, which is a complaint; the second names your own need. Both stop the interruption, but only one keeps the room calm.
I want to say something.
Could I just say something here?
A statement about what you want does not ask for the floor. English hands over a turn in response to a question, so make it one.
Tips
- Wait for the end of a sentence, not the end of the topic. The one-second gap between sentences is the natural door.
- Say why you are interrupting if it is urgent: 'Sorry to cut in, but the client is waiting.' — জরুরি হলে কারণটা বলে দিন: 'Sorry to cut in, but the client is waiting.'
- Keep it short. You borrowed the turn — make your point and hand it back.
- Give the turn back on purpose: 'Sorry, go ahead — you were saying?' — পালাটা ইচ্ছে করে ফিরিয়ে দিন: 'Sorry, go ahead — you were saying?'
- On a video call, unmute and say the person's name first — 'Sorry, Rafiq —' — because there is no eye contact to signal with.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it rude to interrupt in English?
Not if you mark it. 'Sorry to interrupt — could I just add something?' is heard as normal participation. What sounds rude is starting to speak with no apology and no request.
Should I say 'Sorry to interrupt' or 'Sorry for interrupting'?
Both are correct. 'Sorry to interrupt' is used as you are cutting in; 'Sorry for interrupting' looks back at what you have just done. Only 'Sorry for interrupt' is wrong.
Why should I not say 'I have a doubt'?
Because in English a doubt is a suspicion that something is not true. 'I have a doubt about your figures' tells the speaker you think the figures are false. If you want information, say 'I have a question'.
How do I get back to my point after being interrupted?
Use 'As I was saying…' or 'Anyway, coming back to…'. Both are polite, both signal that the earlier point is unfinished, and neither accuses anyone.
