Introductionভূমিকা

In Bangla we describe people by complexion without thinking twice — ফর্সা, শ্যামলা, কালো. Translate that habit into English and you get "She is fair" or "He is black complexion", and in most English-speaking settings you have just said something you did not mean to say. Describing a person is one of the few topics where the danger is social, not grammatical.

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

A description in English has three layers: build and height, face and hair, then personality. Appearance uses "be" for what someone is and "have" for what they possess — she is tall, she has curly hair — and that split is the whole grammar of it.

ইংরেজিতে বর্ণনার তিনটি স্তর: গড়ন ও উচ্চতা, মুখ ও চুল, তারপর স্বভাব। চেহারার ক্ষেত্রে "কেমন" বোঝাতে be, আর "কী আছে" বোঝাতে have — she is tall, she has curly hair — এই ভাগটুকুই এর পুরো ব্যাকরণ।

ব্যাকরণের ভাগটা সহজ: গুণ হলে be, অধিকার হলে have। She is tall. She is slim. He is in his thirties. — কিন্তু She has long hair. He has brown eyes. She has a round face. দুটো মিলিয়ে ফেললেই "She is long hair" বা "He has tall" বেরিয়ে আসে। আর hair শব্দটা ইংরেজিতে সাধারণত অগণনীয় — "long hair", "hairs" নয়। বাংলায় "চুলগুলো" বহুবচনে বলি বলে ভুলটা হয়; মাথার সব চুল মিলিয়ে ইংরেজিতে এক hair। বয়সের গঠনটাও বাংলার উল্টো। বাংলায় বয়স "থাকে" — "তার বয়স ত্রিশ" — তাই আমরা লিখি "His age is 30" বা "He has 30 years"। ইংরেজিতে বয়স হয়: "He is thirty." "He is thirty years old." নির্দিষ্ট সংখ্যা না জানলে বা ভদ্রতা রাখতে চাইলে ইংরেজিতে চমৎকার কিছু বাক্যাংশ আছে: "He's in his early thirties", "She's in her late forties", "He's around my age"। কারও বয়স সরাসরি জিজ্ঞেস করা ইংরেজি সংস্কৃতিতে অনেক জায়গাতেই অভদ্র, বিশেষ করে নারীর ক্ষেত্রে — বাংলাদেশে যেটা নিতান্ত সাধারণ প্রশ্ন। এবার শব্দ নির্বাচনের বিপদগুলো, কারণ এখানেই সবচেয়ে বড় ভুল বোঝাবুঝি হয়। গায়ের রং নিয়ে মন্তব্য — fair, dark, black — ইংরেজিভাষী পেশাগত বা সামাজিক পরিবেশে মানুষকে চেনানোর গ্রহণযোগ্য উপায় নয়, আর অনেক জায়গায় সরাসরি আপত্তিকর। কাউকে ভিড়ের মধ্যে দেখাতে হলে পোশাক বা অবস্থান দিয়ে দেখান: "the tall guy with glasses", "the woman in the blue shirt near the door"। দ্বিতীয়ত, আমাদের এখানে healthy শব্দটা মোটা বোঝাতে ব্যবহার হয় — ইংরেজিতে healthy মানে সুস্থ; গড়ন বোঝাতে বলুন heavy, well-built, বা কিছুই না বলা। তৃতীয়ত, smart — বাংলাদেশে মানে সুদর্শন বা পরিপাটি, আমেরিকান ইংরেজিতে মানে বুদ্ধিমান। "He's very smart" বললে তারা ভাববেন আপনি তার মেধার কথা বলছেন। স্বভাবের বর্ণনায় ইংরেজি অনেক সমৃদ্ধ, আর এখানেই বর্ণনাটা জীবন্ত হয়: kind, friendly, hard-working, honest, patient, easy-going, quiet, outgoing। একটা কৌশল মনে রাখুন — গুণটা বলে একটা উদাহরণ দিন: "She's really patient — she explained the same thing to me three times without getting annoyed." এক লাইনের উদাহরণ দশটা বিশেষণের চেয়ে বেশি কাজ করে, তা সে বন্ধুর কথা বলুন বা চাকরির সুপারিশে।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

She has 25 years.
She is 25 (years old).
For age, English uses 'be', not 'have': 'She is 25', not 'has 25 years' (a direct translation).
He is a man tall.
He is a tall man.
Adjectives go before the noun in English: 'a tall man', not 'a man tall'.
She has hairs long.
She has long hair.
'Hair' is usually uncountable (no 's'), and the adjective 'long' comes first.
He is looking like his brother.
He looks like his brother.
For a general resemblance use the present simple 'looks', not 'is looking'.
