Bangla turns a statement into a question with nothing but your voice — "আমি এখানে বসব" and "আমি এখানে বসব?" are the same words. English cannot do that. Say "I can sit here?" with a rising tone and the words are still a statement; the listener hears a claim, not a request. You have to move the verb.

বাংলা একটা বিবৃতিকে প্রশ্ন বানায় শুধু গলার সুর দিয়ে — "আমি এখানে বসব" আর "আমি এখানে বসব?" একই শব্দ। ইংরেজি এটা পারে না। "I can sit here?" যত সুর তুলেই বলুন, শব্দগুলো বিবৃতিই থেকে যায়; শ্রোতা শোনেন দাবি, অনুরোধ নয়। ক্রিয়াটা সরাতেই হবে।

Asking permission means putting the modal first: Can I…? Could I…? May I…? Or using one of the two "mind" forms — Do you mind if I…? / Would it be okay if I…? The answer you get back is short, and one of those forms answers backwards.

অনুমতি চাওয়া মানে modal-টাকে সামনে আনা: Can I…? Could I…? May I…? অথবা "mind" দিয়ে দুটো রূপের একটা — Do you mind if I…? / Would it be okay if I…? উত্তরটা ছোট আসে, আর ওই রূপগুলোর একটার উত্তর উল্টো দিক থেকে আসে।

তিনটে modal-এর ভাগটা সহজ। Can I — সবচেয়ে সাধারণ ও বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ; বন্ধু, সহকর্মী, দোকানদার। Could I — একটু বেশি ভদ্র, অচেনা কারও কাছে বা একটু বড় অনুরোধে নিরাপদ। May I — সবচেয়ে আনুষ্ঠানিক; শিক্ষক, ইন্টারভিউ বোর্ড, দূতাবাসের কাউন্টার। তিনটেরই পরে মূল ক্রিয়া বসে সরাসরি, to ছাড়া: "May I come in?" — "May I to come in?" নয়, কারণ modal-এর পরে কখনো to বসে না। বাংলাদেশের স্কুলে "May I come in, sir?" এত ভালোভাবে শেখানো হয় যে অনেকের কাছে অনুমতি চাওয়ার এই একটাই বাক্য থেকে যায়, আর সেটা বন্ধুর ঘরে ঢোকার সময়ও বেরিয়ে আসে — যেখানে "Can I come in?" বা শুধু "Is it okay if I come in?" অনেক স্বাভাবিক। উল্টোটাও সত্য: অফিসে বসের ঘরে ঢুকতে "May I come in?" ঠিক, কিন্তু ইউরোপ-আমেরিকার বেশিরভাগ অফিসে দরজায় টোকা দিয়ে "Have you got a minute?" বা "Is now a good time?" বলাই চল। "Do you mind if I…?" নিয়ে সবচেয়ে বড় ফাঁদ। Mind মানে আপত্তি করা, তাই প্রশ্নটার আক্ষরিক অর্থ "আমি জানালা খুললে আপনার আপত্তি আছে?"। অনুমতি দিতে চাইলে উত্তর "No, not at all" বা "No, go ahead" — অর্থাৎ "না, আপত্তি নেই"। "Yes" বললে মানে দাঁড়ায় আপত্তি আছে। বাংলায় আমরা প্রশ্নটাকে সরাসরি "খুলি?" ধরে নিয়ে "হ্যাঁ" বলে ফেলি, আর তাতেই উল্টো বার্তা যায়। সন্দেহ হলে শব্দ দিয়ে পরিষ্কার করে দিন: "Not at all, please do." — এতে ভুল বোঝাবুঝির জায়গাই থাকে না। উত্তর দেওয়ার দিকটাও শিখে রাখুন, কারণ অনুমতি আপনাকেও দিতে বা ফেরাতে হবে। দিতে: "Sure, go ahead.", "Of course.", "Yes, please do." ফেরাতে ইংরেজিতে সরাসরি "No" প্রায় কেউ বলে না; একটা কারণ জুড়ে দেওয়া হয় — "Sorry, not right now — I'm using it." বা "I'd rather you didn't, if that's okay." এই কারণ জোড়ার অভ্যাসটাই ইংরেজিতে ভদ্রভাবে না বলার মূল কৌশল, আর বাংলায় আমরা সেই কাজটা করি সুর নরম করে, যা ইংরেজি বাক্যে অনুবাদ হয় না।

For a question, put 'can' before 'I': 'Can I…?', not 'I can…?'.

'I want to…' is a statement, not a request; ask permission with 'Could I…?'.

Do you mind if I open the window? — No, go ahead.
With 'Do you mind if…', 'No' gives permission and 'Yes' refuses — the opposite of what learners expect.

Remember: answering 'No' to 'Do you mind if I…' actually means 'go ahead'. — মনে রাখবেন: 'Do you mind if I…'-এর উত্তরে 'No' বললে আসলে 'করুন' বোঝায়।
To refuse politely, soften it: 'Sorry, not right now' instead of a flat 'No'. — ভদ্রভাবে না বলতে নরম করুন: শুধু 'No' না বলে 'Sorry, not right now' বলুন।

What is the difference between 'can', 'could' and 'may' for permission?

All three ask permission. 'Can I…?' is the most casual, 'Could I…?' is more polite, and 'May I…?' is the most formal. Use 'could' or 'may' with people you don't know well.
