Every day we ask permission — to leave early, to borrow something, to sit down. In English, the words you choose (can, could, may) change how polite you sound. A few phrases will cover almost every situation.
প্রতিদিনই আমরা অনুমতি চাই — আগে বের হওয়ার, কিছু ধার নেওয়ার, বসার জন্য। ইংরেজিতে আপনি কোন শব্দ (can, could, may) ব্যবহার করছেন তার ওপর নির্ভর করে কতটা ভদ্র শোনাবে। কয়েকটা বাক্যই প্রায় সব পরিস্থিতিতে কাজে দেবে।

Asking permission means politely requesting the right to do something. The most common openers are 'Can I…', 'Could I…', 'May I…' and 'Do you mind if I…' — each a little more formal than the last.
অনুমতি চাওয়া মানে ভদ্রভাবে কোনো কিছু করার অনুমতি চাওয়া। সবচেয়ে প্রচলিত শুরুগুলো হলো 'Can I…', 'Could I…', 'May I…' আর 'Do you mind if I…' — প্রতিটা আগেরটার চেয়ে একটু বেশি ফরমাল।

For a question, put 'can' before 'I': 'Can I…?', not 'I can…?'.

'I want to…' is a statement, not a request; ask permission with 'Could I…?'.
Do you mind if I open the window? — Yes. (meaning: allowed)
Do you mind if I open the window? — No, go ahead.
With 'Do you mind if…', 'No' gives permission and 'Yes' refuses — the opposite of what learners expect.

After 'may/can/could' use the base verb with no 'to' (come, not to come).

- Remember: answering 'No' to 'Do you mind if I…' actually means 'go ahead'. — মনে রাখবেন: 'Do you mind if I…'-এর উত্তরে 'No' বললে আসলে 'করুন' বোঝায়।
- To refuse politely, soften it: 'Sorry, not right now' instead of a flat 'No'. — ভদ্রভাবে না বলতে নরম করুন: শুধু 'No' না বলে 'Sorry, not right now' বলুন।

What is the difference between 'can', 'could' and 'may' for permission?
All three ask permission. 'Can I…?' is the most casual, 'Could I…?' is more polite, and 'May I…?' is the most formal. Use 'could' or 'may' with people you don't know well.
Why does 'No' mean yes with 'Do you mind if I…?'
The question literally asks 'Is it a problem for you?' So 'No' means 'no problem — go ahead', and 'Yes' means 'yes, it bothers me.' A safe reply is 'No, go ahead.'.
