Introductionভূমিকা

"Sir, I have a doubt." In a Bangladeshi classroom it means "I have a question." To an English speaker it means you suspect something is untrue — you doubt the teacher. Nobody is offended, because nobody outside South Asia has heard it enough to be. But it is the first thing that marks a student's English as local.

Classroom English covers four needs: getting permission, asking a question, saying you did not follow, and checking a word. Four needs, about a dozen sentences — and using them is what turns a silent student into a participating one.

"Why do we use 'the' here?" — বাংলায় প্রশ্ন হয় সুর বদলে, তাই "This means what?" বা "I come in?" বেরিয়ে আসে। আর প্রশ্নটা যদি কারও কথার ভেতরে ঢোকাতে হয়, তখন ভদ্র শুরুটা: "Excuse me, could I ask something?" বা "Sorry, I have a question about the last part." বুঝতে না পারলে কী বলবেন — এটাই এই পাতার সবচেয়ে জরুরি অংশ, কারণ আমাদের ক্লাসে না বুঝেও মাথা নাড়ার অভ্যাসটা সবচেয়ে গভীর। মাত্রা অনুযায়ী বাক্য আলাদা: পুরোটা বুঝিনি — "Sorry, I don't understand." একটা শব্দ — "Sorry, what does 'inference' mean?" একটা ধাপ — "I followed until step two, but I lost you after that." দ্রুত বলা হয়েছে — "Could you go over that once more, a bit slower?" শেষ দুটো বিশেষভাবে কার্যকর, কারণ এগুলো ঠিক কোথায় আটকেছেন সেটা বলে দেয়, আর শিক্ষক পুরোটা আবার না বলে ওই জায়গাটাই ধরেন। আর যাঁরা বিদেশে পড়তে যাবেন, তাঁদের জন্য দুটো কথা। এক, ওখানে শিক্ষককে "Sir" বা "Madam" বলে ডাকা হয় না; ডাকা হয় "Dr Rahman", "Professor Ahmed", আর অনেক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে সরাসরি প্রথম নামে — প্রথম ক্লাসেই তাঁরা নিজেরা বলে দেন কোনটা পছন্দ, শুনে রাখুন। দুই, প্রশ্ন করাটা ওখানে বাধা দেওয়া নয়, অংশগ্রহণ — আর অনেক কোর্সে অংশগ্রহণের আলাদা নম্বর থাকে। বাংলাদেশে যে চুপ থাকাটা ভদ্রতা, ওখানে সেটাই আগ্রহহীনতা হিসেবে ধরা হয়।

In English class you ask a 'question'. 'Doubt' means you don't trust something — a different meaning.

Ask 'what does this word mean?' — 'what is meaning of' drops the article and sounds unnatural.

For permission, start with 'May I …?'; 'I come in?' is missing the polite opener.

Add 'please' and 'sir/ma'am' to sound respectful when you speak in class. — ক্লাসে কথা বলার সময় 'please' আর 'sir/ma'am' যোগ করলে শুনতে ভদ্র লাগে।
'Could you…?' is more polite than 'Can you…?' when you ask the teacher for something. — শিক্ষককে কিছু বলতে 'Could you…?' — 'Can you…?'-এর চেয়ে বেশি ভদ্র।
It's okay to say 'I don't understand' — good learners ask questions, they don't stay quiet. — 'I don't understand' বলতে দ্বিধা করবেন না — ভালো শিক্ষার্থীরা প্রশ্ন করে, চুপ থাকে না।
