Students plant six hundred saplings in a day Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj, 9 August 2026 A week-long tree plantation programme began at Sonargaon High School on Saturday, in which students of classes six to ten planted about six hundred saplings inside the school compound and along the road leading to it. The programme was inaugurated by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, who planted the first mango sapling near the school gate. In his short speech he said that a tree planted by a student is looked after far better than one planted by a contractor, because the student passes it every morning. The saplings, supplied by the local forest office, included mango, jackfruit, neem, mahogany and several medicinal plants. Each class was given a section of the compound, and a group of five students was made responsible for watering and protecting the trees in that section until the next rainy season. The school authorities said the survival of the saplings, not the number planted, would decide whether the programme is repeated next year. Teachers and guardians also joined the work. The headmaster said the school had lost several old trees to last year's storm, and this programme was an attempt to replace them before the compound loses its shade altogether.

We should all plant trees to save our environment.
In his speech the Upazila Nirbahi Officer said that a tree planted by a student is looked after far better than one planted by a contractor.
A report carries no opinion of its own; the same idea becomes acceptable content when it is attributed to a speaker at the event.
Writing the report with no headline and no dateline.
A short factual headline, then 'Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj, 9 August 2026'.
Both are scored elements of the report format and are the easiest marks in the item to lose.
Saving the main event for the last paragraph, essay-style.
Naming the event, the place, the participants and the date in the opening paragraph.
A report is written so a reader who stops after the first paragraph still knows what happened, which is the opposite of an essay's build-up.
A large number of trees were planted by the students.
Students planted about six hundred saplings.
Reports use plain figures and active verbs; a vague quantity in the passive voice reads as invention rather than reporting.
- Should a report be written in the past tense?
- Yes, for an event that has happened, and in the third person. The only present-tense material is inside a quotation from a speaker.
- How long should the report be?
- About 180 to 220 words, in four short paragraphs. Reports are compressed by nature, and padding is easy for an examiner to see.
- Can I invent names and numbers?
- Yes — a report in an exam is a composition exercise, so plausible names, figures and dates are expected. Keep them consistent with each other throughout.
