Seven Killed as Bus Hits Truck on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway Staff Correspondent, Narsingdi, 8 August: At least seven people were killed and twenty others injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a truck on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Bhairab yesterday morning. Police said the accident took place at about half past nine near the Bhairab bridge. The Dhaka-bound bus was overtaking a covered van on a bend when it hit the truck coming from the opposite direction. Both vehicles were badly damaged and the front of the bus was crushed. Local people rushed to the scene and rescued the passengers before the fire service arrived. The injured were taken to Bhairab Upazila Health Complex, from where six were sent to Dhaka in a critical condition. Four of the dead have been identified; the others could not be identified until last night. The officer in charge of Bhairab police station said the bus was travelling at high speed and that its driver had fled after the accident. A case has been filed and the truck has been seized. Local residents said this stretch of the highway has seen several accidents this year and that the bend has no warning sign. They demanded speed control and repair of the road surface, which has broken up in places since the monsoon.
