Understanding Reference Words in a Passage
Reference Words: it, this, they কাকে বোঝাচ্ছে
Introductionভূমিকা
'What does "it" in line 5 refer to?' has one safe method behind it: put your answer back where the pronoun stood and read the sentence again. If it agrees in number and still makes sense, you are right. Reference words are also how a whole passage holds together, so following them is not only one question type — it is how you stop losing the thread three paragraphs in.
'What does "it" in line 5 refer to?'
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
A reference word stands in place of something already mentioned — a noun, a person, or a whole idea — so the writer need not repeat it. The common ones are it, they, them, this, that, these, those, one, such, there, then, the former and the latter.
Reference word এমন শব্দ যা আগে বলা কোনো কিছুর — কোনো noun, কোনো ব্যক্তি বা একটি পুরো ভাবের — জায়গায় বসে, যাতে লেখককে সেটি আবার বলতে না হয়। সাধারণগুলো হলো it, they, them, this, that, these, those, one, such, there, then, the former, the latter।
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
প্রথমে পদ্ধতিটা, তারপর ব্যতিক্রমগুলো। পদ্ধতি হলো বসিয়ে দেখা: সর্বনামটির জায়গায় আপনার উত্তরটি বসান আর বাক্যটি পুরো পড়ুন। 'The committee met on Sunday, but it could not take a decision' — 'it'-এর জায়গায় 'the committee' বসিয়ে দেখুন, বাক্য দাঁড়িয়ে যায়। দুটো জিনিস মিলতে হবে: বচন (it, this, that একবচন; they, them, these, those বহুবচন) আর অর্থ। It annoyed his father.' এখানে it মানে 'দেরি করে আসাটা', কোনো শব্দ নয়। দুই, কিছু it কিছুই বোঝায় না — 'It is raining', 'It is hard to say', 'It takes two hours' — এখানে it নিছক বাক্য শুরু করার জন্য বসেছে; এর referent খুঁজতে গেলে সময় নষ্ট হবে, কারণ নেই-ই। তিন, this আর that প্রায়ই আগের পুরো বাক্যটাকে বোঝায়, একটি শব্দকে নয় — 'Prices rose twice in one month. This worried the shopkeepers.' চার, one ও ones নির্দিষ্ট জিনিস নয়, শ্রেণি বোঝায় — 'I lost my old phone, so I bought a new one' মানে নতুন আরেকটি ফোন, ওই একই ফোন নয়।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- 'Karim bought a second-hand bike. It broke down in a week.' → It = the second-hand bike.একবচন noun আছে, অর্থেও বসে — তাই it মানে সাইকেলটি।
- 'The girls reached the ghat early. They had to wait an hour.' → They = the girls.They বহুবচন, তাই একবচন কোনো noun উত্তর হতে পারে না।
- 'He failed to inform anyone. This made the work harder.' → This = his failure to inform anyone.This এখানে আগের পুরো বাক্যটাকে বোঝাচ্ছে, কোনো একটা শব্দকে নয়।
- 'It is difficult to cross the road here.' → 'It' refers to nothing; it only starts the sentence.এই it কিছুই বোঝাচ্ছে না — খুঁজতে যাবেন না, referent নেই।
- 'My umbrella tore, so I borrowed one from Rina.' → one = another umbrella, not the torn one.one মানে একই জিনিস নয়, একই রকম আরেকটি।
- 'Rina and Sabbir applied. The former got the job.' → the former = Rina.the former মানে দুজনের প্রথমজন — নাম দুটির ক্রমই উত্তর দেয়।
- 'Rahim met his sister at the station. She had come from Khulna.' → 'She' can only be the sister.ইংরেজিতে he আর she নিজেই দুজনকে আলাদা করে দেয় — বাংলায় 'সে' এই সুবিধাটা দেয় না।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
'The boxes on the shelf were dusty. They…' → answering 'the shelf'.
Answering 'the boxes'.
'They' is plural, and 'the shelf' is singular. Number decides before nearness does — the nearest noun is only a starting guess.
Hunting for what 'it' refers to in 'It is raining' or 'It takes an hour'.
Recognising that this 'it' is only a sentence-opener and refers to nothing.
English requires a subject in every sentence, so it supplies an empty one where there is no real subject. Bangla can leave the subject out, so the empty 'it' has no counterpart to recognise it by.
'The train was cancelled. This upset the passengers.' → answering 'the train'.
Answering 'the cancellation of the train'.
'This' very often points to the whole previous statement rather than to one noun in it, and here only the cancellation can upset anybody.
Losing track of who 'he' is three sentences after the name was given.
Writing the name lightly above the pronoun the first time it appears in your rough work.
Bangla usually repeats the name or drops the pronoun, so a long English pronoun chain is unfamiliar and easy to lose — one pencil mark fixes it.
Answering a reference question with a phrase copied from the wrong sentence and never checking it.
Substituting your answer back in place of the pronoun and reading the sentence again.
The substitution test takes two seconds and catches nearly every wrong answer, because a wrong referent almost always sounds wrong once it is put in place.
Tipsটিপস
- Always substitute your answer back into the sentence. If the sentence reads well, the answer is right. — উত্তরটি সর্বনামের জায়গায় বসিয়ে বাক্যটি পড়ুন — বাক্য ঠিক শোনালে উত্তরও ঠিক।
- Check number first: it/this/that are singular, they/them/these/those are plural. — আগে বচন মিলান — it, this, that একবচন; they, them, these, those বহুবচন।
- If no single noun fits, ask whether the pronoun points to a whole action or idea. — কোনো একটি noun না মিললে দেখুন সর্বনামটি পুরো একটি কাজ বা ভাবকে বোঝাচ্ছে কি না।
- When two people appear in a paragraph, let 'he' and 'she' tell you which is which. — একটি অনুচ্ছেদে দুজন থাকলে he আর she-ই বলে দেবে কে কোনটি — এই সূত্রটা কাজে লাগান।
- In your rough work, draw an arrow from each pronoun back to its noun on the first read. — প্রথম পড়াতেই প্রতিটি সর্বনাম থেকে তার noun পর্যন্ত একটা তীর টেনে রাখুন।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
What are reference words in reading?
Words that stand in for something already mentioned so it need not be repeated — it, they, this, that, one, such, there, then, the former, the latter. Following them is how you keep track of who and what a passage is talking about.
How do I find what 'it' refers to?
Put your answer back where 'it' stood and read the sentence again. The answer must agree in number and the sentence must still make sense. If no single noun works, check whether 'it' points to a whole action or idea instead.
Does a pronoun always refer to the nearest noun before it?
Usually, but not always — nearness is a good first guess, not a rule. Number agreement and meaning override it, and 'this' or 'that' often refers to an entire previous sentence rather than to any noun in it.
Why is 'it' sometimes not referring to anything?
Because every English sentence needs a subject, English uses an empty 'it' where there is no real one — 'It is raining', 'It takes an hour', 'It is difficult to say'. Bangla can simply leave the subject out, so this use has no equivalent to recognise it by and is worth learning as a separate case.
