The pocket English-to-Bangla dictionary is where several of our most stubborn mistakes are born. Look up 'agree' and it gives রাজি — so students write 'I am agree'. Look up 'discuss' and it gives আলোচনা করা — so they write 'discuss about it'. Look up 'information' and it gives তথ্য, a word you can count — so they write 'many informations'. The Bangla gloss is not wrong. It is just far too small a piece of the truth, because it tells you the meaning and hides the grammar.

A learner's dictionary entry carries five things, and the meaning is only one of them: the pronunciation in symbols, the word class, the grammar pattern (does the verb take an object? which preposition follows? is the noun countable?), the numbered senses, and example sentences. The pattern and the examples are where usage actually lives.
একটি learner's dictionary-র এন্ট্রিতে পাঁচটি জিনিস থাকে, আর অর্থ তার একটিমাত্র: চিহ্নে লেখা উচ্চারণ, পদ, ব্যাকরণের ছাঁচ (ক্রিয়াটি কি কর্ম নেয়? পরে কোন preposition বসে? বিশেষ্যটি কি গোনা যায়?), নম্বর দেওয়া অর্থগুলো, আর উদাহরণ বাক্য। ব্যবহারের আসল খবরটা থাকে ওই ছাঁচ আর উদাহরণেই।

প্রথম পরামর্শ, আর এটাই সবচেয়ে বেশি কাজে দেবে: একটা learner's dictionary ব্যবহার করুন — অর্থাৎ ইংরেজি ভাষা শিখছেন এমন মানুষের জন্য বানানো ইংরেজি-ইংরেজি অভিধান। এগুলোর সংজ্ঞা সহজ শব্দে লেখা, আর সবচেয়ে বড় কথা, প্রতিটি এন্ট্রিতে ব্যাকরণের ছাঁচ দেওয়া থাকে। ইংরেজি-বাংলা অভিধান একেবারে বাদ দিতে হবে না — নতুন শব্দের প্রথম পরিচয়ের জন্য ওটা দ্রুত ও কাজের; কিন্তু শব্দটা নিজে ব্যবহার করার আগে learner's dictionary-তে একবার দেখে নিন। এন্ট্রির যে অংশগুলো আমরা টপকে যাই, সেগুলোতেই আসল তথ্য। [C] মানে countable, [U] মানে uncountable — এই এক চিহ্নই 'informations', 'advices', 'furnitures', 'equipments' ভুলগুলো শেষ করে দেয়। [T] মানে transitive, [I] মানে intransitive — অর্থাৎ ক্রিয়াটির পরে কর্ম বসবে কি না। আর সবচেয়ে দামি অংশ হলো ছাঁচের লাইন: 'agree with somebody', 'agree to something', 'discuss something' (about নেই), 'depend on', 'consist of', 'suffer from', 'succeed in'। এই লাইনটাই ঠিক করে দেয় আপনার বাক্য শুদ্ধ হবে না ভুল। একই শব্দের একাধিক অর্থ থাকলে প্রথমটা নিয়ে চলে যাবেন না — এটা খুব সাধারণ ভুল। অভিধানে অর্থগুলো সাজানো থাকে ব্যবহারের ঘনত্ব অনুযায়ী, আপনার বাক্যের প্রয়োজন অনুযায়ী নয়। তাই প্রতিটি অর্থের সঙ্গের উদাহরণ বাক্যটা পড়ুন আর দেখুন কোনটার গঠন আপনার বাক্যের মতো। 'run' শব্দটির অভিধানে বিশটির বেশি অর্থ আছে — দৌড়ানো, পরিচালনা করা, চলা, প্রবাহিত হওয়া; কোনটা লাগবে তা ঠিক করে দেয় আপনার বাক্য, তালিকার ক্রম নয়। উচ্চারণের অংশটাও ছাড়বেন না, কারণ আমাদের এখানে শব্দ চোখে ঢোকে আর কানে ঢোকে না। আজকের অনলাইন অভিধানে উচ্চারণ শোনার বোতাম থাকে — একবার চাপুন, আর নোটে তিনটি জিনিস লিখে রাখুন: কয়টি beat, কোন beat-এ জোর, আর কোনো নীরব অক্ষর আছে কি না। যেমন 'determine (3, dəTERmin)'। এই দশ সেকেন্ডের অভ্যাসটাই ভবিষ্যতের বহু ভুল উচ্চারণ ঠেকিয়ে দেয়। আর শেষে একটা কথা কখন অভিধান দেখবেন তা নিয়ে, কারণ বেশি দেখাও একটা সমস্যা। পড়ার সময় প্রতিটি অচেনা শব্দে থামবেন না — দাগ দিয়ে এগিয়ে যান, আর পড়া শেষে একবারে তিন-চারটি দেখুন, বিশেষ করে যেগুলো একাধিকবার এসেছে। অভিধান পড়াকে ধীর করার যন্ত্র নয়; ওটা সেই যন্ত্র, যা দিয়ে আপনি ঠিক করে নেন একটা শব্দ কীভাবে ব্যবহার করতে হয়। অর্থ জানার জন্য প্রসঙ্গই যথেষ্ট; ব্যবহার জানার জন্য অভিধান লাগে।
