একাডেমিক লেখা পড়ার আগে পুরো পৃষ্ঠাটা একবার চোখ বুলিয়ে নিন — শিরোনাম (heading), সাবহেডিং, মোটা অক্ষরে লেখা শব্দ ও প্রথম-শেষ বাক্য। এটাকে বলে preview। এরপর দ্রুত চোখ চালিয়ে (skim) মূল ভাব ধরুন। প্রতিটি অনুচ্ছেদের প্রথম বাক্য সাধারণত মূল কথা (topic sentence) বলে দেয়। কঠিন শব্দ এলেই ডিকশনারিতে দৌড়াবেন না — আগে আশপাশের বাক্য থেকে অর্থ আন্দাজ (guess from context) করার চেষ্টা করুন। গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পয়েন্ট নিজের ভাষায় ছোট করে নোট নিন। একবার না বুঝলে আবার পড়ুন — একাডেমিক লেখা দুবার পড়াই স্বাভাবিক।
