বেশিরভাগ ধীরগতির পাঠক তিনটি অভ্যাসে আটকে থাকেন। এক, মনে মনে প্রতিটি শব্দ উচ্চারণ করা (subvocalization) — এতে পড়ার গতি কথা বলার গতির সমান হয়ে যায়। দুই, একটা একটা শব্দ ধরে পড়া — চোখকে ২-৩টি শব্দ একসাথে (word groups) নেওয়ার অভ্যাস করান। তিন, পড়া লাইনে বারবার পিছিয়ে যাওয়া (regression)। গতি বাড়াতে আঙুল বা কলম দিয়ে লাইন ধরে চোখ টানুন, এতে চোখ পিছায় কম। সবসময় দ্রুত পড়ার দরকার নেই — খবর বা ইমেইলে দ্রুত (skim), কিন্তু চুক্তি বা কঠিন লেখায় ধীরে। প্রতিদিন ১৫ মিনিট ইংরেজি পড়লে গতি নিজে থেকেই বাড়ে।
