To summarize is to state the main idea and the most important supporting points of a text in a few of your own words, leaving out examples, repetition and minor details.
সারসংক্ষেপ করা মানে একটি লেখার মূল ভাব ও সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সহায়ক পয়েন্টগুলো নিজের অল্প কিছু শব্দে বলা, উদাহরণ, পুনরাবৃত্তি ও ছোটখাটো তথ্য বাদ দিয়ে।

সারসংক্ষেপের সহজ পদ্ধতি চারটি ধাপে। ধাপ ১: পুরো লেখা একবার পড়ুন এবং নিজেকে জিজ্ঞেস করুন — 'এটা মূলত কী নিয়ে?' এটাই main idea। ধাপ ২: প্রতিটি অনুচ্ছেদের সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বাক্যটি খুঁজুন; এগুলো হলো key points। ধাপ ৩: উদাহরণ, সংখ্যা, পুনরাবৃত্তি ও ছোট বিবরণ বাদ দিন — এগুলো সারসংক্ষেপে লাগে না। ধাপ ৪: এখন নিজের ভাষায় ১–২টি বাক্যে পুরোটা বলুন, লেখকের বাক্য হুবহু কপি না করে। একটা ভালো পরীক্ষা হলো: বন্ধুকে এক লাইনে বলুন লেখাটা কী নিয়ে ছিল — সেটাই আপনার সারসংক্ষেপ। মনে রাখবেন, সারসংক্ষেপ সবসময় মূল লেখার চেয়ে অনেক ছোট হবে।

- The topic sentence 'Exercise keeps the body healthy' is usually the main idea; the examples after it are details.'ব্যায়াম শরীর সুস্থ রাখে' — topic sentence সাধারণত মূল ভাব; এর পরের উদাহরণগুলো শুধু বিবরণ।
- Ask 'Who did what, and why?' to shape a summary: 'The boy shared his lunch because his friend was hungry.''কে কী করল, আর কেন?' জিজ্ঞেস করে সারসংক্ষেপ গড়ুন: 'ছেলেটি তার বন্ধু ক্ষুধার্ত থাকায় দুপুরের খাবার ভাগ করে দিল।'
- Use your own words: instead of copying 'commenced', write 'began'.নিজের ভাষা ব্যবহার করুন: 'commenced' কপি না করে 'began' লিখুন।
- A good summary of a whole story keeps only the beginning, the main problem and the ending.একটি গল্পের ভালো সারসংক্ষেপে শুধু শুরু, মূল সমস্যা এবং শেষটা রাখা হয়।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Copying whole sentences straight from the text.
Retell the idea in your own words.
Copying shows you can find words, not that you understood; your own words prove real understanding.
Including every small detail and example.
Keep only the main idea and the most important supporting points.
A summary must be much shorter than the original; details make it as long as the text.
Adding your own opinion or new information.
Report only what the text actually says.
A summary describes the author's ideas, not your feelings or extra facts.
Making the summary almost as long as the original text.
Aim for one or two clear sentences (or roughly a quarter of the length).
If it is not much shorter, it is not really a summary.

How long should a summary be?
Much shorter than the original — often one or two sentences, or about a quarter of the length. If it is nearly as long as the text, you have kept too many details.
Can I use the author's exact sentences in my summary?
It is better not to. Retelling in your own words shows you truly understood the text. Copying only proves you can find sentences, not that you grasped the meaning.
How do I find the main idea to summarize?
Ask 'What is this mostly about?' The answer is the main idea. The topic sentence, often the first sentence of a paragraph, usually states it directly.
