The main idea is the central point of a paragraph or text. It is often stated in a topic sentence (frequently the first or last sentence), while the other sentences are supporting details that explain or prove it.
মূল ভাব হলো একটি অনুচ্ছেদ বা লেখার কেন্দ্রীয় বক্তব্য। এটি প্রায়ই একটি topic sentence-এ থাকে (সাধারণত প্রথম বা শেষ বাক্য), আর বাকি বাক্যগুলো হলো সহায়ক বিবরণ যা তা ব্যাখ্যা বা প্রমাণ করে।

মূল ভাব বের করার সবচেয়ে সহজ প্রশ্ন — 'এই লেখাটা মূলত কী নিয়ে?' এক লাইনে উত্তর দিন, সেটাই মূল ভাব। কয়েকটি সূত্র মনে রাখুন। এক, topic sentence খুঁজুন — অনুচ্ছেদের প্রথম বাক্য সাধারণত মূল ভাব বলে দেয় (কখনো শেষ বাক্যেও থাকে)। দুই, মূল ভাব ও details আলাদা করুন — যে বাক্যগুলো উদাহরণ, সংখ্যা বা 'for example' দিয়ে শুরু, সেগুলো details, মূল ভাব নয়। তিন, যে শব্দটি বা বিষয়টি বারবার আসে, লেখাটা সাধারণত তা নিয়েই। চার, শিরোনাম বা title প্রায়ই মূল ভাবের ইঙ্গিত দেয়। সাবধান — মূল ভাব খুব সরু (একটি ছোট উদাহরণ) বা খুব চওড়া (পুরো বিষয়) হবে না; এটি ঠিক মাঝামাঝি, পুরো লেখাকে ধারণ করে।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Choosing one small example as the main idea.
Choose the broad point that all the details support.
An example is just one supporting detail; the main idea covers the whole paragraph.
Picking a point so wide it covers far more than the text says.
State an idea that fits exactly what this text is about — not the entire topic.
A main idea that is too general does not match the specific text you read.
Assuming the main idea is always the first sentence.
Check the first and last sentences, and see what the details point to.
The topic sentence is often first, but sometimes it comes last or is implied.
Confusing the topic (one word) with the main idea (a full point).
State the main idea as a full sentence, not just a topic word.
'Trees' is a topic; 'Trees are useful' is a main idea that makes a point.
