Two in the morning, a fever, and a strip of medicine with the dosage printed on it in English. The pharmacist explained it in Bangla twelve hours ago and you remember roughly. That is the moment this skill is for. Instructions are the one kind of English where a small misreading has an immediate physical cost, and they are also the easiest kind to learn — because they are written in a tiny, fixed grammar that repeats everywhere.

An instruction is a bare imperative — the verb with no subject in front of it: Add, Press, Shake, Store, Do not exceed. Around those verbs sit three kinds of signal: sequence words (first, then, before, after, until), condition words (if, unless, when), and safety words (Warning, Caution, Do not). Read the verb, then read which signal is attached to it.

প্রথম নিয়ম, আর এটা প্রায় সবাই ভাঙে: শুরু করার আগে পুরো নির্দেশনাটা একবার পড়ে ফেলুন। ধাপ পাঁচে গিয়ে যদি লেখা থাকে 'Preheat the oven' বা 'Disconnect the power first', তখন ধাপ এক থেকে চার আবার করতে হবে। রেসিপি, যন্ত্রের ম্যানুয়াল, ফর্ম — সব ক্ষেত্রেই এক কথা। এক মিনিটের এই পড়াটা প্রায়ই আধঘণ্টা বাঁচায়। ওষুধের নির্দেশনার শব্দগুলো আলাদা করে শিখে রাখুন, কারণ এখানে ভুলের কোনো ক্ষমা নেই। Twice daily মানে দিনে দুইবার, thrice daily বা three times a day মানে তিনবার। Before meals মানে খাবারের আগে, after meals মানে পরে, on an empty stomach মানে খালি পেটে, at bedtime মানে ঘুমানোর আগে। Every six hours মানে ছয় ঘণ্টা পরপর — দিনে চারবার, আর এটা 'তিনবেলা খাবারের সঙ্গে'র চেয়ে আলাদা। As needed বা SOS মানে দরকার হলে, নিয়মিত নয়। Complete the course মানে ভালো লাগলেও পুরোটা শেষ করতে হবে। Do not exceed the stated dose মানে লেখা মাত্রার বেশি নয়। আর Shake well before use মানে সিরাপ ঝাঁকিয়ে নিতে হবে, নইলে ওষুধ নিচে জমে থাকে। ফর্মের নির্দেশনাও একটা আলাদা জগৎ, আর ভিসা, চাকরি বা ভর্তির ফর্মে এগুলোই সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হয়। Fill in BLOCK LETTERS মানে সব বড় হাতের অক্ষরে। Tick whichever is applicable মানে যেটা প্রযোজ্য সেটায় টিক দিন। Strike out whichever is not applicable মানে যেটা প্রযোজ্য নয় সেটা কেটে দিন। Attach a recent passport-size photograph মানে সাম্প্রতিক ছবি লাগবে, পুরনো নয়। Enclose photocopies, do not send originals মানে ফটোকপি দিন, মূল কাগজ নয়। To be filled in by the office মানে ওই ঘরটা আপনার নয়। And N/A মানে not applicable — অর্থাৎ ঘরটা ফাঁকা না রেখে N/A লিখে দিতে হয়। পরীক্ষার প্রশ্নপত্রের নির্দেশনাও নির্দেশনা, আর এখানে গাফিলতির দাম সরাসরি নম্বরে। Answer any five of the following মানে যেকোনো পাঁচটি — ছয়টি লিখলে বাড়তি নম্বর নেই, শুধু সময় নষ্ট। Answer in your own words মানে হুবহু কপি নয়। In not more than 100 words মানে সীমা আছে। All questions carry equal marks বনাম Marks are indicated in the margin — দ্বিতীয়টা দেখলে বুঝবেন কোন প্রশ্নে কত সময় দেবেন। প্রশ্নপত্র হাতে পেয়ে প্রথম এক মিনিট শুধু এই লাইনগুলো পড়ুন। আর সতর্কতার শব্দগুলোর একটা ক্রম আছে, যেটা জানা থাকলে ঝুঁকি মাপা যায়: Note সবচেয়ে হালকা, Caution মানে ক্ষতি হতে পারে, Warning মানে আঘাত লাগতে পারে, আর Danger মানে সরাসরি প্রাণহানির ঝুঁকি। যন্ত্র, বৈদ্যুতিক সরঞ্জাম, রাসায়নিক বা নির্মাণকাজের নির্দেশনায় এই চারটি শব্দ দেখলে থামুন এবং পুরো লাইনটা পড়ুন — এখানে আন্দাজ করার জায়গা নেই।
