How to Read an Unseen Passage in English
Unseen Passage পড়ার পদ্ধতি
Introductionভূমিকা
You cannot prepare an unseen passage, but you can prepare the way you read one — and that is the whole skill, because the four tasks set on it never change even though the passage does. Read it twice with two different purposes: once to find out what kind of text it is, and once, with the questions in your hand, to find the exact lines that answer them.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
An unseen passage is a text you have never read before, printed in the question paper. In the SSC English 1st Paper it carries 28 of the 70 reading marks — information transfer (5), summary (10), matching (5) and re-arranging sentences (8).
Unseen passage মানে এমন একটি লেখা যা আপনি আগে কখনো পড়েননি, আর যা প্রশ্নপত্রেই ছাপা থাকে। SSC ইংরেজি প্রথম পত্রে এটি Reading-এর ৭০ নম্বরের মধ্যে ২৮ নম্বর বহন করে — information transfer ৫, summary ১০, matching ৫ ও re-arranging ৮।
Bangla Explanation
Examplesউদাহরণ
- First read, one question: 'Is this telling a story, explaining something, or arguing a point?'প্রথম পড়ায় একটাই প্রশ্ন: এটি গল্প বলছে, কিছু ব্যাখ্যা করছে, নাকি কোনো মত প্রমাণ করছে?
- Passage line: 'The village got its first tube well in 2009.' — a date and a fact, so underline it for the table.তারিখ ও তথ্য — information transfer-এর ছকে এটাই বসবে, তাই দাগিয়ে রাখুন।
- Passage line: 'However, the water was not safe to drink.' — 'However' means the previous sentence said the opposite.'However' মানে আগের বাক্যটি উল্টো কথা বলেছে — re-arranging-এ এটি সরাসরি সূত্র।
- Sentence to order: 'Then he sold the cow and bought a rickshaw.' — 'Then' means it cannot be the first sentence.'Then' থাকা বাক্য কখনো প্রথম হয় না — এর আগে কিছু ঘটেছে।
- Sentence to order: 'Karim lived in a small village near Faridpur.' — a name and no pronoun, so it can open the set.নাম আছে, সর্বনাম নেই — এমন বাক্য দিয়েই শুরু হয়।
- Unknown word: 'The pond was stagnant and full of weeds.' — 'full of weeds' tells you stagnant is not a good thing.অচেনা শব্দ পেলে থামবেন না — পাশের কথাগুলোই ইঙ্গিত দেয়, এখানে 'full of weeds' বলে দিচ্ছে stagnant ভালো কিছু নয়।
- Do the summary last, when the passage is the text you know best in the room.Summary সবার শেষে — ততক্ষণে অনুচ্ছেদটি আপনার সবচেয়ে চেনা লেখা।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Translating each English sentence into Bangla in your head as you read the passage.
Reading straight through for meaning, and translating only the one line you must answer from.
School reading in Bangladesh is often taught as sentence-by-sentence translation, so the habit is strong — but it roughly doubles the reading time and breaks the link between one sentence and the next.
Stopping at the first unknown word and trying to remember its meaning.
Reading on, and coming back to guess the word from the sentences around it if a question needs it.
An exam passage is written so that its main idea survives a few unknown words. Stopping costs the thread of the passage, which is worth far more than one word.
Ordering re-arranged sentences by which one 'sounds like a beginning'.
Ordering them by pronouns, time words and connectors — a sentence starting with He, It, Then or However cannot come first.
Bangla often drops the pronoun altogether, so a Bangla reader does not automatically hear that 'He sold the cow' is pointing backwards to a name given earlier.
Writing full sentences inside an information transfer table.
Writing the word, phrase or number the column asks for.
A table asks for the information, not the sentence. Long answers in a box waste the time you need for the ten-mark summary and add nothing.
Copying the passage's own sentences into the summary.
Writing the same information in your own shorter sentences.
A summary is marked on compression and on your English, so lifted sentences show neither — and many examiners deduct for it.
Tipsটিপস
- Read once without a pen, then once with one. The first read decides where to look; the second read looks. — প্রথমবার কলম ছাড়া পড়ুন, দ্বিতীয়বার কলম নিয়ে। প্রথম পড়া ঠিক করে কোথায় খুঁজতে হবে, দ্বিতীয় পড়া খোঁজে।
- Number the paragraphs before you start. Then every answer you find has an address you can return to. — শুরুতেই অনুচ্ছেদগুলোতে নম্বর বসিয়ে নিন — তাহলে প্রতিটি উত্তরের একটা ঠিকানা থাকে, ফিরে আসা সহজ হয়।
- Do the information transfer before the summary. Filling the table is close reading you get marks for twice. — Summary-র আগে information transfer করুন — ছক ভরতে গিয়ে যে মনোযোগী পড়াটা হয়, তার ফল দুবার পাবেন।
- Practise on any short English text — a newspaper report is an unseen passage you can find any day of the week. — যেকোনো ছোট ইংরেজি লেখাতেই অনুশীলন করুন — খবরের কাগজের একটি রিপোর্টও একটি unseen passage।
- Never read the whole passage a third time. Go back only to the paragraph that holds the missing answer. — তৃতীয়বার পুরো অনুচ্ছেদ পড়বেন না — শুধু যে অনুচ্ছেদে বাকি উত্তরটি আছে সেখানেই ফিরুন।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
How many marks does the unseen passage carry in SSC?
Twenty-eight of the seventy reading marks in the English 1st Paper: information transfer 5, summary 10, matching 5 and re-arranging sentences 8. That is the largest block of marks in the paper you cannot prepare by memorising.
How many times should I read an unseen passage?
Twice, with different purposes — once for the shape of the text, once with the questions in hand for the details. After that, go back only to the specific paragraph you still need, never to the whole passage again.
What if I do not understand several words in the passage?
Keep reading. Exam passages are built so the main idea comes through despite a few unfamiliar words, and most questions are set on information rather than on rare vocabulary. Guess a word from its neighbours only when a question depends on it.
Can I practise for an unseen passage at all?
Yes — you practise the method, not the text. Use any short English article and run the same routine: read for shape, number the paragraphs, underline names and numbers, then write a five-line summary. The passage in the exam will be new; the routine will not be.
