How to Write a Summary in English

A summary retells a longer text in a much shorter form, keeping only the main ideas. It shows that you truly understood the passage — which is exactly why exams love it.
সারাংশ (summary) একটি বড় লেখাকে অনেক ছোট আকারে আবার বলে, শুধু মূল ভাবগুলো রেখে। এটি প্রমাণ করে যে তুমি লেখাটি সত্যিই বুঝেছ — আর ঠিক এ কারণেই পরীক্ষায় এটি এত জনপ্রিয়।

A summary is a short version of a text — usually about one-third of the original — that states the main points in your own words, without examples, repetition or personal opinion.
সারাংশ হলো কোনো লেখার সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ — সাধারণত মূল লেখার প্রায় এক-তৃতীয়াংশ — যা উদাহরণ, পুনরাবৃত্তি বা নিজের মতামত ছাড়া, নিজের ভাষায় মূল ভাবগুলো তুলে ধরে।

সারাংশ লেখার ধাপ: (১) পুরো লেখাটি অন্তত দুবার মন দিয়ে পড়ো যেন মূল ভাব বোঝো। (২) প্রতিটি অনুচ্ছেদের মূল বাক্য (topic sentence) খুঁজে বের করো। (৩) উদাহরণ, পুনরাবৃত্তি, ছোট ছোট বিস্তারিত অংশ বাদ দাও। (৪) মূল ভাবগুলো নিজের ভাষায় ছোট করে লেখো — লেখকের বাক্য হুবহু নকল কোরো না। (৫) দৈর্ঘ্য মূল লেখার প্রায় এক-তৃতীয়াংশ রাখো। মনে রেখো: সারাংশে নিজের কোনো মতামত, নতুন তথ্য বা “I think” যোগ করা যাবে না। এটি সবসময় third person ও present tense-এ লেখা ভালো।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Copying whole sentences straight from the passage.
Rewrite the main idea in your own words.
A summary tests your understanding, so it should be in your language, not the author's exact words.

Including every example and small detail from the text.
