Introductionভূমিকা

Bangla র is a hit. The tongue tip flies up, strikes the roof of the mouth once and drops — you can feel the knock in রাত, করা, ভোর. English /r/ has no knock in it at all. The tongue rises towards the same area and stops short, touching nothing, and the sound comes from that gap. This is the one English consonant where the instruction is not 'move your tongue here' but 'do less than you are doing'.

English /r/ is an approximant: the tongue either curls its tip slightly back or bunches its middle upward, the sides press against the upper back teeth, the lips round a little, and no part of the tongue makes contact. Because there is no contact, the sound can be held as long as your breath lasts — which is the test that separates it from Bangla র.

ধরে রাখার পরীক্ষা দিয়েই শুরু করুন, কারণ এতে ভুলটা নিজের কানে ধরা পড়ে। টেনে বলুন rrrrrrr, পাঁচ সেকেন্ড। যদি পাঁচ সেকেন্ড একটানা থাকে, আপনি ইংরেজি /r/ বলছেন। যদি ররররর-এর মতো ঠোকার সারি বেরোয়, ওটা বাংলা 'র'। এবার ধরে রাখা ধ্বনিটার সামনে স্বর জুড়ুন: rrrr-ed → red, rrrr-ain → rain, rrrr-oad → road। জিভ যেন উপরে ওঠার পথে কোথাও না ঠেকে — মনে মনে বলুন, জিভটা তালুর দিকে যাচ্ছে কিন্তু পৌঁছাচ্ছে না। দ্বিতীয় জায়গাটা আরও কঠিন, আর এখানেই বাংলাদেশি উচ্চারণ সবচেয়ে বেশি ধরা পড়ে: শব্দের মাঝখানের r। very, sorry, America, married, arrange, three hundred — এই শব্দগুলোতে দুই স্বরের মাঝখানে r বসে, আর দুই স্বরের মাঝে জিভ স্বাভাবিকভাবেই একটা ঠোকা দিতে চায়। ফলে very হয় 'ভেরি' (ঠোকা-সহ), sorry হয় 'সরি'। এখানে ইচ্ছে করে ধীর হতে হবে: ve—rrr—y, জিভটাকে ওই মাঝের অংশে ভাসিয়ে রেখে তারপর y-তে যান। তৃতীয় জায়গা: tr আর dr গুচ্ছ। train, tree, drive, dress, country, address। বাংলা লেখায় আমরা এগুলো ট্র, ড্র দিয়ে লিখি, আর ট্র-এর 'র' আবার সেই ঠোকা। ইংরেজিতে tr প্রায় 'ch'-এর মতো একটা ঘষা ধ্বনি হয়ে যায় — train শুনতে অনেকটা 'chrain', dress অনেকটা 'jress'। এটা অলসতা নয়, এটাই স্বাভাবিক ইংরেজি; t-এর পরপরই /r/-এর জন্য জিভ পেছনে যায় বলে মাঝখানে ওই ঘষাটা তৈরি হয়। তাই 'তিন' বলতে গিয়ে three-কে 'ট্রি' বললে শ্রোতা tree শোনে, three নয়। চতুর্থ প্রশ্নটা সবাই করে: শব্দের শেষের r বলব, না বলব না? car, water, teacher, sir, four। আমেরিকান উচ্চারণে বলা হয়, ব্রিটিশ উচ্চারণে বলা হয় না — দুটোই সমান শুদ্ধ, IELTS-এ দুটোই সমান গ্রহণযোগ্য, এবং পরীক্ষক শুধু দেখেন আপনি একটাতে স্থির আছেন কি না। বাংলা বানান আমাদের এখানে টানে ভুল দিকে, কারণ বাংলা লিপিতে যা লেখা তা-ই উচ্চারিত হয়, তাই আমরা লেখা প্রতিটা r-কে পূর্ণ শক্তিতে উচ্চারণ করি — 'কার পার্ক' হয়ে যায় দুটো আলাদা ঠোকা। একটা ধারা বেছে নিন, তারপর কানের চেয়ে বেশি বিশ্বাস করুন হাতের আঙুলকে: জিভ কোথাও ঠেকলেই ধরে নিন ভুল হয়েছে।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

Rolling 'red' like বাংলা 'র্‌রেড' with a tapped tongue.
Say 'red' with the tongue curled back, touching nothing.
The English R is an approximant — a tap or roll instantly sounds like Bangla, not English.
Saying 'light' when you mean 'right' (R → L).
For R, curl the tongue back; for L, the tongue tip touches behind the teeth.
R and L are different: R has no contact, L has firm tongue-tip contact.
Dropping or over-stressing final R: 'car' → 'কা' or hard 'কার্‌'.
Give final R a light, smooth touch (or a soft glide in British English).
Bangla speakers often either delete it or hit it too hard; English keeps it gentle.
Adding a vowel before R clusters: 'true' → 'তুরু'.
Blend 'tr' together in one motion: 'true', 'tree', 'dream'.
English allows consonant clusters; inserting a vowel breaks the natural rhythm.

Why is the English R so hard for Bangla speakers?

Because the Bangla র is a quick tap of the tongue, while the English R has no contact at all. The muscle habit is completely different, so it needs slow, deliberate practice.

Is the American R and British R the same?

The R before a vowel (red, right) is similar in both. The difference is at the end of a word: American English keeps a light R in 'car', while British English usually drops it. Pick one accent and stay consistent.
