Vocational education is training that teaches a specific practical trade — electrical work, welding, motor mechanics, tailoring, nursing, computer servicing, plumbing — rather than an academic subject. It matters here for a plain reason. Our colleges produce more general graduates than there are desks for them, and at the same time factories, hospitals and construction firms advertise for skilled workers they cannot find, and some are filled by foreigners. A country with high graduate unemployment and a shortage of technicians has a training problem rather than a jobs problem. Vocational education is also faster and cheaper. A course of one or two years leads directly to work, the training costs less than a degree, and a skilled worker abroad earns several times what an unskilled one does, which changes what a family sends home. What holds it back is status. Parents want a son with a degree, not with a trade, and a school sends its weakest students to the technical stream, which keeps the reputation exactly where it is. That is the real reform needed: treating technical training as a first choice for able students rather than a last resort for the rest.

কারিগরি শিক্ষা মানে একাডেমিক বিষয়ের বদলে নির্দিষ্ট ব্যবহারিক পেশার প্রশিক্ষণ — বৈদ্যুতিক কাজ, ওয়েল্ডিং, মোটর মেকানিক, দর্জিবিদ্যা, নার্সিং, কম্পিউটার সার্ভিসিং, প্লাম্বিং। এ দেশে এর গুরুত্ব সহজ কারণেই: আমাদের কলেজগুলো যত সাধারণ স্নাতক তৈরি করে, তাঁদের জন্য তত ডেস্ক নেই; আর একই সময়ে কারখানা, হাসপাতাল ও নির্মাণপ্রতিষ্ঠান এমন দক্ষ কর্মী খুঁজে বিজ্ঞাপন দেয় যাঁদের তারা পায় না — কিছু পদ পূরণ হয় বিদেশি দিয়ে। যে দেশে স্নাতক বেকারত্ব বেশি অথচ টেকনিশিয়ানের ঘাটতি, সেখানে সমস্যাটা চাকরির নয়, প্রশিক্ষণের। কারিগরি শিক্ষা দ্রুত ও সস্তাও: এক-দুই বছরের কোর্স সরাসরি কাজে নিয়ে যায়, খরচ ডিগ্রির চেয়ে কম, আর বিদেশে দক্ষ শ্রমিক অদক্ষ শ্রমিকের কয়েক গুণ আয় করেন।

এই বিষয়ে সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী যুক্তিটা একটা **স্ববিরোধিতা**: স্নাতক বেকার, অথচ দক্ষ কর্মী পাওয়া যায় না — কিছু পদ বিদেশি দিয়ে পূরণ হয়। এই এক বাক্যেই প্রমাণ হয় সমস্যাটা চাকরির নয়, প্রশিক্ষণের। ক্রম: (১) সংজ্ঞা ও উদাহরণ; (২) **ওই স্ববিরোধিতা**; (৩) সুবিধা — সময় কম, খরচ কম, সরাসরি কাজ, বিদেশে বেশি আয়; (৪) **কেন পিছিয়ে — মর্যাদা**: বাবা-মা ডিগ্রি চান, আর স্কুল দুর্বল শিক্ষার্থীদের কারিগরি শাখায় পাঠায়; এই দ্বিতীয় কারণটা প্রায় কেউ লেখে না, অথচ এটাই সুনাম আটকে রাখে; (৫) সমাধান — কারিগরি শিক্ষাকে **শেষ উপায় নয়, প্রথম পছন্দ** হিসেবে দেখা।
