The Garment Industry Paragraph

The ready-made garment industry is the largest export earner of Bangladesh and the largest employer outside farming. It began in the late nineteen-seventies with a handful of factories and now supplies clothing to almost every major brand in Europe and North America, making this the second largest garment exporter in the world. About four million people work in it, and roughly two-thirds of them are women, most from villages, many earning money of their own for the first time in their families' history. That single fact has changed marriage ages, family size and household decisions across rural Bangladesh more than any campaign did. The industry has also cost lives. The Rana Plaza building collapsed in 2013 and killed more than eleven hundred workers who had been ordered into a building with visible cracks. What followed was real: thousands of factories were inspected, unsafe ones were closed, fire exits and structural repairs were enforced, and Bangladesh now has some of the safest garment factories anywhere. Wages, however, remain low, and buyers keep pressing prices down. An industry built on the labour of women should not be the last to pay them properly.
