Bangladesh is a land of rivers. More than seven hundred rivers and their branches run across it, and the whole country is the delta they built. Rivers gave this country almost everything it has. The silt they carry made our soil among the most fertile in the world, they water the fields, they carry cargo and passengers more cheaply than any road, and they hold the fish that has been our main protein for centuries. Our songs, our poetry and even our sense of distance come from them. They also take. Floods destroy crops every few years, and erosion swallows villages whole, leaving families with land that exists only on paper. What is happening to them now is worse than either. Rivers are being filled in for buildings, dyed black by factory waste, choked with polythene, and drained by dams upstream. The Buriganga beside our capital is biologically dead. A country made by rivers is killing the thing that made it.
