Floods in Bangladesh Paragraph

A flood is an overflow of water that covers land which is normally dry. Bangladesh is a delta built by three great rivers, so a certain amount of flooding is natural and even useful, because the silt it leaves makes our soil among the most fertile in the world. The damage comes when the water rises higher or stays longer than usual. Heavy monsoon rain, water rushing down from the hills of India and Nepal, silted riverbeds, unplanned embankments and blocked drains together turn a normal flood into a disaster. When that happens, crops rot in the field, houses collapse, cattle drown and tube wells go under, so drinking water itself becomes dangerous. Diarrhoea, cholera and skin disease follow within days, and children miss months of school. Relief helps but arrives unevenly, and families who lose land to erosion often move to city slums and never return. We cannot stop floods in a delta, and pretending we can wastes money. What we can do is dredge the rivers, build raised shelters, plan embankments properly, keep an early warning system working and grow varieties of rice that survive being under water.

বন্যা মানে পানি উপচে এমন জমি ঢেকে ফেলা যা সাধারণত শুকনো থাকে। বাংলাদেশ তিনটি বড় নদীর গড়া বদ্বীপ, তাই কিছুটা বন্যা স্বাভাবিক, এমনকি উপকারীও — পলি জমে আমাদের মাটি বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে উর্বরগুলোর একটি হয়েছে। ক্ষতি হয় তখনই, যখন পানি স্বাভাবিকের চেয়ে বেশি ওঠে বা বেশিদিন থাকে। প্রবল বর্ষা, ভারত ও নেপালের পাহাড় থেকে নেমে আসা পানি, পলি জমে ভরাট নদী, অপরিকল্পিত বাঁধ ও বন্ধ নালা — সব মিলে স্বাভাবিক বন্যাকে দুর্যোগে পরিণত করে। তখন মাঠে ফসল পচে, ঘর ভেঙে পড়ে, গবাদিপশু ডুবে যায়, নলকূপ তলিয়ে যায় — ফলে খাবার পানিই বিপজ্জনক হয়ে ওঠে। কয়েক দিনেই ডায়রিয়া, কলেরা ও চর্মরোগ দেখা দেয়।
