Kazi Nazrul Islam is the national poet of Bangladesh. He was born in 1899 at Churulia in Burdwan, in a family so poor that he worked as a caretaker of a mosque and in a bread shop as a boy, and he never completed his formal schooling. He joined the army as a young man, and the years he spent there shaped the voice that made him famous. In 1922 he published 'Bidrohi', a poem so defiant that it changed Bengali poetry overnight and earned him the name Bidrohi Kabi, the rebel poet. He wrote against colonial rule and was imprisoned for it, and he wrote just as fiercely against religious hatred and the oppression of women and the poor. He also wrote nearly four thousand songs, the body of work now called Nazrul Sangeet. In 1942 an illness silenced him, and he lived the last thirty-four years of his life unable to speak or write. Bangladesh brought him to Dhaka in 1972 and honoured him as national poet, and he lies buried beside the Dhaka University mosque, as he had once asked in a song.
