Our national flag is the symbol of Bangladesh as an independent country. It is a bottle-green rectangle with a red circle a little left of the centre, so that when it flies the circle appears to sit in the middle. The green stands for the fields and forests of a land that is green almost all year, and the red circle stands for the sun of a new country and for the blood of those who died to win it in 1971. The proportion is fixed by law at ten to six, and the circle is one fifth of the length. The flag is hoisted every day on government offices, schools and colleges, and on Independence Day and Victory Day it flies on almost every house. On days of national mourning it is flown at half-mast. There are rules of respect that many people do not know: it must never touch the ground, never be used as a cover or a decoration, never be flown torn or faded, and never be hoisted after sunset unless it is lit. A flag is only cloth until people agree what it means, and ours was agreed at a very high price.
