My favourite teacher is Mr Aminul Islam, who teaches us English. He is about fifty, tall and thin, and always comes to school in a plain shirt with a bag of exercise books under his arm. What makes him different is not his degree but his method. He does not read the textbook aloud and ask us to memorise it. He begins with a question, lets us argue about it, and only then tells us the rule, so we remember it because we needed it. He learns every student's name within a week and notices when someone is quiet for several days. He never insults a wrong answer; he asks how we arrived at it, and half the time the mistake turns into the day's lesson. He stays back after class for anyone who did not follow, and he has never taken money for private tuition from his own students, which is rarer than it should be. Because of him I stopped fearing English and started reading it outside class. A good teacher teaches a subject; a teacher like him changes what a student believes he is capable of.
