Kindness to animals means treating them as creatures that feel pain rather than as things that happen to be useful. We depend on them completely. Cattle plough our fields and give milk, hens give eggs, fish and meat feed us, bees pollinate what we grow, and a bird eating insects protects a crop better than a spray does. Yet cruelty is ordinary here and mostly unnoticed. A cart bullock is beaten uphill with a load it cannot pull. A cow is kept tied in one position all day. Stray dogs are stoned by children who have been taught nothing else, and poisoned when a neighbourhood decides there are too many. Birds are trapped and sold in cages, and animals are killed for skin and horn. Kindness is not complicated and costs almost nothing. Water put out in a bowl in the summer, an animal not overloaded, a sick street dog left alone rather than driven away, and children corrected the first time they throw a stone will do most of it. A society is easy to read from this: people who are careless about the suffering of an animal are rarely careful about the suffering of a person.
