Globalization is the process by which countries become connected through trade, technology, travel and the movement of people, until an event in one part of the world is felt everywhere. Cheap transport, satellite television and above all the internet have made it possible for a business in Dhaka to serve a customer in London the same afternoon. Bangladesh has gained a great deal from it. Our garment industry exists because global buyers source here; millions of jobs, most of them held by women, came with it. Freelancers earn foreign currency from home, our workers find employment abroad, our students study on courses taught from another continent, and medicine, seed and technology reach us far faster than before. But globalization is not an equal exchange. A small local producer cannot compete with an imported product made at ten times the scale. Our factories are pressed to cut costs because the buyer can move to another country in a month. Young people absorb foreign habits and dress and grow distant from their own literature and language. The sensible response is neither to shut the door nor to open it blindly, but to compete where we are strong and protect what cannot be replaced.

বিশ্বায়ন হলো সেই প্রক্রিয়া, যাতে বাণিজ্য, প্রযুক্তি, ভ্রমণ ও মানুষের চলাচলের মাধ্যমে দেশগুলো এমনভাবে যুক্ত হয়ে পড়ে যে পৃথিবীর এক প্রান্তের ঘটনা সব প্রান্তে অনুভূত হয়। সস্তা পরিবহন, স্যাটেলাইট টেলিভিশন আর সর্বোপরি ইন্টারনেট ঢাকার একটি ব্যবসাকে একই বিকেলে লন্ডনের ক্রেতার সেবা দেওয়ার সুযোগ দিয়েছে। বাংলাদেশ এ থেকে অনেক কিছু পেয়েছে: বৈশ্বিক ক্রেতারা এখান থেকে কেনেন বলেই আমাদের পোশাকশিল্প টিকে আছে, আর তার সাথে এসেছে লাখো কর্মসংস্থান — বেশিরভাগই নারীর। ফ্রিল্যান্সাররা ঘরে বসে বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা আয় করেন, শ্রমিকেরা বিদেশে কাজ পান, শিক্ষার্থীরা অন্য মহাদেশের কোর্সে পড়েন। কিন্তু বিশ্বায়ন সমান বিনিময় নয়। দশ গুণ বড় মাপে বানানো আমদানি পণ্যের সাথে ছোট স্থানীয় উৎপাদক পেরে ওঠেন না।
