English is the language in which the world does business, and knowing it decides a great deal in Bangladesh. It is an international link language: a Bangladeshi engineer, a Chinese buyer and a German supplier who share no other tongue will meet in English. In our own country it opens the doors that matter. Almost every good job advertisement asks for it, university textbooks in science and medicine are written in it, and a worker going abroad earns far more if he can understand instructions. Higher study anywhere outside the country requires it, and so does IELTS. Beyond work, English gives access to information: most of what has been written on the internet, from medical advice to programming, exists first in English and reaches Bangla years later, if at all. Yet knowing this is not the same as learning it. We study English for ten years and still hesitate to speak, because our classrooms teach grammar for examinations rather than language for use. The remedy is practice rather than more rules: listening every day, speaking without fear of mistakes, and reading things we actually enjoy. A language is a habit, and habits are built by use.

ইংরেজি সেই ভাষা যাতে বিশ্ব ব্যবসা করে, আর বাংলাদেশে এটা জানা অনেক কিছু ঠিক করে দেয়। এটি আন্তর্জাতিক সংযোগ-ভাষা: বাংলাদেশি প্রকৌশলী, চীনা ক্রেতা ও জার্মান সরবরাহকারী — যাঁদের অন্য কোনো ভাষা মেলে না — তাঁরা ইংরেজিতেই বসেন। নিজের দেশেও এটি দরকারি দরজাগুলো খোলে: প্রায় প্রতিটি ভালো চাকরির বিজ্ঞাপনে ইংরেজি চাওয়া হয়, বিজ্ঞান ও চিকিৎসার বই ইংরেজিতে লেখা, বিদেশগামী শ্রমিক নির্দেশ বুঝলে অনেক বেশি আয় করেন। দেশের বাইরে উচ্চশিক্ষা ও IELTS-এও এটি লাগে। ইন্টারনেটের বেশিরভাগ তথ্য আগে ইংরেজিতেই আসে, বাংলায় আসে বহু পরে — বা আসেই না। তবু জানা আর শেখা এক নয়। দশ বছর পড়েও আমরা বলতে দ্বিধা করি, কারণ ক্লাসে পরীক্ষার ব্যাকরণ শেখানো হয়, ব্যবহারের ভাষা নয়।
কীভাবে লিখবেন — structure
এই বিষয়ে প্রায় সব উত্তর একই কথা লেখে — 'ইংরেজি আন্তর্জাতিক ভাষা'। আলাদা হওয়ার সবচেয়ে ভালো উপায় দুটো: **নির্দিষ্ট সুবিধা** (চাকরির বিজ্ঞাপন, বিজ্ঞানের বই, বিদেশে বেশি মজুরি, IELTS) আর **সৎ সমালোচনা** (দশ বছর পড়েও বলতে পারি না, কারণ পরীক্ষার ব্যাকরণ শেখানো হয়)। দ্বিতীয়টা প্রায় কেউ লেখে না, অথচ পরীক্ষক নিজেই জানেন এটা সত্য। ক্রম: (১) কেন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ — বিশ্ব; (২) বাংলাদেশে নির্দিষ্ট সুবিধা; (৩) তথ্যে প্রবেশাধিকার; (৪) আমাদের সমস্যা; (৫) সমাধান — নিয়ম নয়, অনুশীলন। শেষ বাক্য 'ভাষা একটা অভ্যাস, আর অভ্যাস ব্যবহারে তৈরি হয়' — সংক্ষিপ্ত ও জোরালো।
