Model Paragraph (204 words)
Arsenic is a poison that occurs naturally in the soil of our delta and has seeped into the groundwater that millions of Bangladeshis drink. The tragedy is that it entered our lives through a solution. In the 1970s tube wells were sunk across the country so that families would stop drinking pond water and dying of diarrhoea and cholera. It worked, and it saved many lives — but nobody tested for arsenic, and for twenty years people drank slow poison believing it was the safe choice. Arsenic has no taste, smell or colour, so nothing warned them. The effects appear only after years: dark spots and hard patches on the palms and feet, then sores that do not heal, then cancers of the skin, lung and bladder, and finally death. Whole families in Chandpur, Comilla, Faridpur and other southern districts have been affected, and sufferers are sometimes shunned by neighbours who mistake the marks for a contagious disease. Wells have been tested and painted red or green, deep tube wells and filters have been installed, and rainwater harvesting has been tried. Much has improved, but many red-marked wells are still in use, because a poisoned well nearby beats a safe one two kilometres away.

Arsenic is a poison that occurs naturally in the soil of our delta and has seeped into the groundwater millions of Bangladeshis drink. It entered our lives through a solution: tube wells were sunk in the 1970s so families would stop drinking pond water, but nobody tested for arsenic. It has no taste, smell or colour. The effects appear after years — dark spots on the palms and feet, sores that do not heal, then cancer. Wells have been tested and painted red or green, and filters installed. But many red wells are still used, because a poisoned well nearby beats a safe one two kilometres away.

- Which districts are worst affected?
- Southern and south-central districts, including Chandpur, Comilla, Faridpur and Noakhali. Naming a few is safer than claiming a national figure.
- What do the red and green marks on tube wells mean?
- Red means the water tested unsafe for drinking; green means safe. Explaining this is genuinely useful and almost no sample answer includes it.
- Is arsenicosis contagious?
- No. It comes only from drinking contaminated water over years. Saying so plainly is the most valuable sentence in the paragraph.
