A tea stall is a small shop where tea and light snacks are sold. There is one at almost every crossing, bus stand, market and college gate in Bangladesh, and it is usually the busiest few square metres of the neighbourhood. The stall itself is simple: a tin or bamboo shed, a counter with glass jars of biscuits, a kettle steaming all day on a stove, rows of glass cups, and two or three wooden benches outside. Besides tea it sells cigarettes, bananas, cakes, boiled eggs and singara. The owner works from before dawn until late at night, often with a boy who washes cups and carries trays. What makes a tea stall interesting is not the tea. It is where a rickshaw puller, a college student, a shopkeeper and an office clerk sit on the same bench and argue about cricket, prices and politics with equal confidence. News travels through tea stalls faster than through newspapers, and not all of it is true. For the price of a cup, a person gets a seat, a conversation and half an hour out of the heat.

চায়ের দোকান ছোট এক দোকান, যেখানে চা ও হালকা খাবার বিক্রি হয়। বাংলাদেশে প্রায় প্রতিটি মোড়, বাসস্ট্যান্ড, বাজার ও কলেজ গেটে একটা আছে, আর সেটাই সাধারণত এলাকার সবচেয়ে ব্যস্ত কয়েক বর্গমিটার। দোকানটা সাদামাটা: টিন বা বাঁশের ছাউনি, বিস্কুটের কাচের বয়ামসহ কাউন্টার, সারাদিন ফুটতে থাকা কেটলি, সারি সারি কাচের কাপ, আর বাইরে দুই-তিনটি কাঠের বেঞ্চ। চা ছাড়াও বিক্রি হয় সিগারেট, কলা, কেক, সেদ্ধ ডিম ও সিঙ্গারা। মালিক ভোরের আগে থেকে রাত পর্যন্ত কাজ করেন, প্রায়ই সাথে থাকে কাপ ধোয়া ও ট্রে বওয়া একটি ছেলে। চায়ের দোকান আকর্ষণীয় চায়ের জন্য নয় — এখানে রিকশাচালক, কলেজছাত্র, দোকানদার ও কেরানি একই বেঞ্চে বসে সমান আত্মবিশ্বাসে ক্রিকেট, দাম ও রাজনীতি নিয়ে তর্ক করেন।

বর্ণনামূলক প্যারাগ্রাফ, তাই নম্বর আসে **নির্দিষ্ট জিনিস** থেকে: কাচের বয়াম, ফুটন্ত কেটলি, কাঠের বেঞ্চ, সিঙ্গারা। ক্রম: (১) সংজ্ঞা; (২) কোথায় থাকে; (৩) দেখতে কেমন; (৪) কী বিক্রি হয়; (৫) মালিক ও কর্মচারী; (৬) **কারা বসে ও কী নিয়ে কথা হয়**। ষষ্ঠ অংশটাই আসল — চায়ের দোকান আসলে সামাজিক জায়গা, যেখানে শ্রেণিভেদ কিছুক্ষণের জন্য মুছে যায়। ওই কথাটা লিখলে উত্তরটা বর্ণনা থেকে পর্যবেক্ষণে উন্নীত হয়। কাপ-ধোয়া ছেলেটির কথাও রাখুন — সৎ, আর শিশুশ্রমের প্রশ্নটা না বলেও ছুঁয়ে যায়।
