A postman is a government employee who delivers letters, money orders, parcels and official papers from the post office to people's houses. He wears a khaki uniform, carries a heavy bag over his shoulder and goes on a bicycle, or on foot where a cycle cannot go. He reaches the post office early, sorts what is addressed to his area, and then walks the same round he has walked for years, so that he knows every lane, every gate and every dog on it. His pay is small and his work is not light. He goes out in heat, in rain and in the flooded lanes of the monsoon, and in a village he may cover twenty kilometres in a day. His work has changed more than anyone's. Once he brought everything: the news of a birth, a death, an examination result, a letter from a son working abroad, and whole families waited for him at the gate. Mobile phones have taken most of that away. Now he mostly carries official envelopes and parcels ordered online. Still, he is one of the few public servants a village knows by name, and there is a reason people used to be glad to see him.
