A bus stand is a place where buses stop to pick up and set down passengers. Every town has at least one, usually on the main road at the edge of the market. A large stand has a row of small ticket counters, each belonging to a different company, with fares and departure times written on a board. Buses stand in a line, their helpers hanging from the door and shouting the names of destinations to anyone walking past. Tea stalls, fruit sellers, a repair shop and a line of rickshaws and CNGs waiting for arriving passengers surround it. The noise is constant: horns, engines, the helpers' calls and the loudspeaker of a counter. A bus stand is rarely a comfortable place. There is often no proper shed, the ground turns to mud in the rain, the toilets are poor, and a woman travelling alone is not always treated well. Buses leave when they are full rather than when the ticket says. Yet it works. Thousands of people reach their villages from a bus stand every day, and before every Eid it becomes the most crowded few hundred metres in the district.
