Watching without subtitles is not a method — it is a result. The method is a ladder: the same scene watched with English subtitles, then without, then a new scene without. Each rung uses a piece of film short enough to repeat, because the thing that trains an ear is repetition of one small piece, not exposure to two hours of new sound.

শুরু করার আগে ছবি বাছাইটা ঠিক করুন, কারণ এখানেই বেশির ভাগ চেষ্টা মারা যায়। সবচেয়ে সহজ থেকে সবচেয়ে কঠিন ক্রমটা এরকম: অ্যানিমেশন (স্পষ্ট উচ্চারণ, শিশুদের জন্য বানানো), সিটকম (স্টুডিওতে রেকর্ড, পরিষ্কার সংলাপ, ছোট পর্ব), পারিবারিক নাটক, ডকুমেন্টারি (বর্ণনাকারী স্পষ্ট বলেন), তারপর সাধারণ সিনেমা, আর সবার শেষে অ্যাকশন, ক্রাইম, যুদ্ধ ও ব্রিটিশ আঞ্চলিক ছবি। বিশ মিনিটের একটা সিটকম পর্ব দিয়ে শুরু করলে যতটা এগোবেন, আড়াই ঘণ্টার ব্লকবাস্টার দিয়ে ততটা কোনোদিনই নয়। এবার সিঁড়িটা, আর এখানে 'দৃশ্য' মানে গোটা ছবি নয় — দুই থেকে তিন মিনিট। ধাপ এক: ইংরেজি subtitle সহ দেখুন, বোঝার জন্য। ধাপ দুই: subtitle বন্ধ করে ঠিক ওই একই দৃশ্য আবার দেখুন — এবার আপনি জানেন কী বলা হচ্ছে, তাই কান শুধু ধ্বনির সঙ্গে শব্দ মেলাচ্ছে, আর এই ধাপেই আসল শেখাটা হয়। ধাপ তিন: পরের দৃশ্যটা সরাসরি subtitle ছাড়া চেষ্টা করুন, তারপর subtitle দিয়ে মিলিয়ে দেখুন কতটা ঠিক ছিল। বাংলা subtitle এই সিঁড়িতে নেই — ওতে গল্প বোঝা যায়, কান কিছুই শেখে না। একটা কৌশল আছে যা বাংলাদেশে সহজেই কাজে লাগানো যায়: এমন ছবি বাছুন যেটা আপনি আগেই দেখেছেন। কাহিনি জানা থাকলে মাথা অর্থ খোঁজা বন্ধ করে ধ্বনির দিকে মন দিতে পারে — অনেকটা খবরের ক্ষেত্রে বাংলা সংস্করণ আগে দেখে নেওয়ার মতো। প্রিয় একটা ছবি পাঁচবার দেখা, পাঁচটা নতুন ছবি একবার করে দেখার চেয়ে অনেক বেশি শেখায়, যদিও কম আকর্ষণীয় শোনায়। দুটো জিনিস আলাদা করে শিখে রাখুন, কারণ সিনেমার সংলাপ এদের ওপরেই দাঁড়ানো। এক, phrasal verb: hang out, figure out, give up, come on, back off, get away, shut up, check out, look after, put up with। আমাদের পড়াশোনা আনুষ্ঠানিক শব্দের দিকে ঝোঁকে বলে এগুলোই সবচেয়ে বেশি ফসকায়। দুই, চুক্তিবদ্ধ ও ভাঙা রূপ: gonna, wanna, gotta, kinda, lemme, gimme, ain't, 'cause, y'know। সংলাপে এগুলোর ঘনত্ব খবর বা বক্তৃতার চেয়ে অনেক বেশি। আর একটা কারিগরি পরামর্শ, যেটা অনেকের কাজে লাগে। আধুনিক ছবিতে সংলাপ ইচ্ছে করেই সংগীত ও শব্দসজ্জার সঙ্গে মিশিয়ে দেওয়া হয়, তাই ফোনের বা ল্যাপটপের স্পিকারে কথা প্রায়ই চাপা পড়ে যায়। হেডফোন ব্যবহার করুন — এতে শোনার মান হঠাৎ অনেকটা বাড়ে, আর অনেক সময় যেটাকে নিজের কানের দোষ ভাবছিলেন সেটা আসলে স্পিকারের দোষ ছিল। শেষে একটা প্রত্যাশা ঠিক করে নিন: subtitle ছাড়া ছবি বোঝা কয়েক মাসের কাজ নয়, কয়েক বছরের; কিন্তু পথের প্রতিটা ধাপেই আপনার শোনা এগোতে থাকে, আর সেটাই আসল লাভ।
