English Listening for Beginners
Introduction
If spoken English still sounds like one long, fast blur, you are exactly who this guide is for. Beginners do not need films or fast podcasts yet — you need slow, simple audio and a clear plan to train your ears one small step at a time.
Definition
Beginner listening means training with slow, clear audio on everyday topics — greetings, numbers, family, food — so you first learn to hear single words and short sentences before tackling fast, natural speech.
Bangla Explanation
Examples
- Greeting: "How are you?" — a common opener.Greeting: "How are you?"
- Reply: "I'm fine, thank you."উত্তর: "I'm fine, thank you."
- Numbers trap: "thirteen" (13) vs "thirty" (30).
- "What's your name?" — asking someone's name."What's your name?"
- "See you tomorrow." — a common goodbye."See you tomorrow."
- "Can you say that again?" — asking for a repeat."Can you say that again?"
- "Excuse me" — to get attention politely."Excuse me" মানে ভদ্রভাবে মনোযোগ চাওয়া।
Common Mistakes
Starting with fast films and native podcasts.
Starting with slow, graded beginner audio.
Fast audio is discouraging at this level; slow, clear speech lets your ears actually catch words.
Confusing "thirteen" and "thirty" (or fourteen/forty).
Listening for the stress: THIR-teen vs THIR-ty.
The -teen numbers stress the ending; the -ty numbers stress the start, so stress tells them apart.
Translating every word into Bangla as you listen.
Trying to catch the main idea of the sentence.
Word-by-word translation is far too slow and makes you lose the rest of the audio.
Listening for an hour once a week.
Listening 5-10 minutes every day.
Ears train through frequent short exposure, not rare long sessions.
Tips
- Pick slow, clear beginner audio and replay each clip two or three times.
- Listen with the transcript first, then hide it and listen again.
- Practise numbers and days separately — they are common but easy to mishear. —
- Keep sessions short and daily: 5-10 minutes beats one long weekly session. —

I am a complete beginner. Where do I start listening?
Start with slow, graded beginner audio on everyday topics — greetings, numbers, family and food. Use a transcript at first, replay short clips, and keep sessions to 5-10 minutes daily.
Should I understand every word to make progress?
No. Aim to catch the main idea, not every word. Missing some words is normal even for advanced learners; understanding improves as your ears get more exposure.
Why do numbers like thirteen and thirty confuse me?
They share most sounds and differ mainly in stress: thir-TEEN versus THIR-ty. Practise numbers on their own and listen for which syllable is stronger.
