How to Understand English Lectures
ইংরেজি লেকচার বোঝার উপায়
Introductionভূমিকা
A lecture is not a conversation you have to keep up with word by word — it is a structure with signposts in it. Learn the twenty or so phrases a lecturer uses to say 'this is important', 'I am saying that again in easier words' or 'now I am moving on', and you can lose whole sentences and still know exactly where you are.
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Signposting language is the set of fixed phrases a speaker uses to show the shape of a talk: what is coming, what is important, what is only an illustration, and what has just been contradicted. In a lecture these phrases are more useful than the vocabulary, because they tell you where to spend your attention.
Bangla Explanation
শুরুতে গঠন বলা হয়: 'Today I'm going to look at three things' — এখান থেকেই আপনি জানেন নোটে তিনটি ভাগ লাগবে। ভাগ বদলের সময় আসে 'Firstly', 'Moving on to', 'That brings me to'। গুরুত্ব বোঝাতে আসে 'The key point here is', 'What I want you to remember is' — এই বাক্যগুলোর পরেরটুকু হুবহু লিখে ফেলুন। সংজ্ঞা দেওয়ার সময় বক্তা সাধারণত ধীরে বলেন এবং স্লাইডেও লেখেন। আর সবচেয়ে দরকারি সংকেত হলো পুনরাবৃত্তির সংকেত: 'In other words', 'That is to say', 'Put simply' — এগুলো মানে একই কথা সহজ ভাষায় আবার আসছে, অর্থাৎ আপনার হারানো বাক্যটা ফেরত পাওয়ার দ্বিতীয় সুযোগ। উল্টোদিকে 'For example', 'Let's say' মানে উদাহরণ শুরু — উদাহরণ লম্বা ও মজার হয়, কিন্তু আসল কথাটা তার আগেই বলা হয়ে গেছে। আর 'However', 'On the other hand', 'But the problem is' শুনলে সতর্ক হোন: এখনই কথাটা ঘুরে যাবে, এবং শুধু আগের অংশটা নোট করে রাখলে নোটটা ভুল হয়ে যাবে।
Examplesউদাহরণ
- "Today I want to look at three causes of river erosion." — the structure of the whole lecture, in one sentence."আজ আমি নদীভাঙনের তিনটি কারণ দেখব।" — এক বাক্যেই পুরো লেকচারের গঠন।
- "The key point here is that the cost rises faster than the income." — write this one down word for word."এখানে মূল কথা হলো, খরচ আয়ের চেয়ে দ্রুত বাড়ে।" — এই বাক্যটা হুবহু লিখে ফেলুন।
- "In other words, the soil simply cannot hold the water." — the same idea again, in easier words."অন্যভাবে বললে, মাটি পানি ধরে রাখতে পারে না।" — একই কথা আবার, সহজ ভাষায়।
- "For instance, take a farmer near the Padma." — an illustration is starting; the claim came before it."যেমন ধরুন পদ্মার পাড়ের একজন কৃষক।" — উদাহরণ শুরু হচ্ছে; মূল দাবিটা এর আগেই বলা হয়েছে।
- "However, that is only true in the dry season." — the point is about to be limited or reversed."তবে এটা কেবল শুকনো মৌসুমেই সত্যি।" — কথাটা এখন সীমিত বা উল্টো হতে যাচ্ছে।
- "That brings me to my second point." — a new section is beginning; start a new line in your notes."এবার আমার দ্বিতীয় পয়েন্টে আসি।" — নতুন অংশ শুরু; খাতায় নতুন লাইন শুরু করুন।
- "So, to sum up, there were three factors." — the summary repeats everything that mattered."তাহলে সংক্ষেপে, তিনটি বিষয় ছিল।" — সারসংক্ষেপে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সবকিছু আবার আসে।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Trying to write down everything the lecturer says.
Writing only what follows a signal of importance, plus your own short cues.
Writing and listening compete for the same attention. A sentence copied in full is usually two sentences missed, and the copied sentence is rarely the important one.
Stopping to work out a sentence you missed while the lecture continues.
Leaving a dash in your notes and waiting for the next signpost.
A lecture is organised, so the next transition phrase puts you back on the track. Chasing a lost sentence costs you the section it belonged to.
Noting the example and not the point it was illustrating.
Noting the claim first, then a two-word reminder of the example.
Examples are long, concrete and easy to remember, so they crowd out the short abstract sentence before them — and that sentence is the one the exam asks about.
Arriving with no idea of the topic.
Reading the topic in Bangla for ten minutes beforehand.
Unknown English terms become guessable once the concept is familiar. Without the concept, every term is new at once, and the lecture becomes a listening test instead of a lesson.
Tipsটিপস
- Learn the three signal families first: importance, repetition and contrast. They decide what you write. — প্রথমে তিন ধরনের সংকেত শিখুন: গুরুত্ব, পুনরাবৃত্তি ও বিপরীত। এগুলোই ঠিক করে কী লিখবেন।
- Treat 'in other words' as a second chance — the sentence you just lost is coming back in simpler English. — 'In other words' মানে দ্বিতীয় সুযোগ — যে বাক্যটা হারিয়েছেন সেটাই সহজ ইংরেজিতে ফিরে আসছে।
- With a recorded lecture, watch once at normal speed for the shape, then replay only the parts you marked. — রেকর্ড করা লেকচারে প্রথমবার স্বাভাবিক গতিতে গঠনটা বুঝুন, তারপর শুধু দাগ দেওয়া অংশগুলো আবার শুনুন।
- Write the lecture's own structure at the top of the page: three points means three headings. — পাতার ওপরে লেকচারের গঠনটাই লিখে রাখুন: তিনটি পয়েন্ট মানে তিনটি শিরোনাম।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
How can I follow an English lecture if I do not catch every word?
You are not supposed to catch every word — no listener does, in any language. Follow the signposts instead: the phrases that mark a new section, an important point, a repetition or a contrast. They tell you the shape of the argument even when individual sentences slip past.
What should I actually write down?
Whatever follows a signal of importance, every definition, and a two-word cue for each example. Do not copy sentences that are being illustrated or repeated — you will hear those again in the summary, and copying them costs you the material in between.
Is it better to record the lecture and listen again?
A recording helps only if you use it selectively. Listening to fifty minutes twice is slow and usually gets abandoned. Mark the points where you lost the thread, and replay only those, which turns a second listening into ten focused minutes.
How do I prepare before a lecture in English?
Spend ten minutes on the topic in Bangla and note five or six key terms in English. Knowing the concept means an unfamiliar English word can be worked out from context, whereas an unfamiliar concept in an unfamiliar language leaves nothing to guess from.
Why do online course lectures feel easier than live classes?
Because you can pause, rewind and often read a transcript, so the listening is no longer under time pressure. That makes them excellent practice, but it is worth also listening once straight through without pausing, since a live lecture or a meeting will not offer those controls.
