Rampura, Dhaka 9 August 2026 My dear Nabil, I received your letter last week and was glad to hear that you are well. You asked what I want to become, and I have been thinking about how to answer it properly. I want to be a doctor. I know how that sounds — half our class says the same — but I did not choose it because it is respected or well paid. You remember my grandmother. She died of an illness that could have been treated, and the nearest doctor was thirty kilometres from our village. We reached him too late. There are still villages in this country where one qualified doctor serves twenty thousand people. I know what it will take: good marks in the science subjects, a place in a medical college, five years of study and years of practice after that. The cost worries me, because my father is not a wealthy man, and I shall probably depend on a stipend. Two things I have already decided. I will practise in a district town rather than in Dhaka, and I will not turn away a patient who cannot pay that day. Write and tell me what you have decided for yourself.
