IELTS Speaking Part 3 Discussion Guide
IELTS Speaking Part 3 আলোচনা গাইড
Introductionভূমিকা
Part 3 is where our exam training does the most damage, because a Bangladeshi student asked a hard question instinctively hunts for the right answer — the one in the guide, the one the teacher wants. There is no right answer here. “Do you think governments should fund the arts?” has no marking key; the examiner is scoring the English you use while thinking out loud. A confident wrong opinion, explained and exemplified, scores far above a correct one delivered in five nervous words.
Part 3-এই আমাদের পরীক্ষা-প্রশিক্ষণ সবচেয়ে বেশি ক্ষতি করে, কারণ কঠিন প্রশ্ন শুনলে বাংলাদেশি শিক্ষার্থী সহজাতভাবেই “সঠিক উত্তর” খুঁজতে শুরু করেন — গাইডে যেটা আছে, স্যার যেটা চান। এখানে সঠিক উত্তর বলে কিছু নেই। “Do you think governments should fund the arts?”
Definitionসংজ্ঞা
Part 3 is a four-to-five minute two-way discussion of abstract questions linked to your Part 2 topic — about society, causes, comparisons and the future. Answers run three to five sentences: a position, a reason, an example, and often a concession. It is the part where the examiner finds out whether you can handle ideas, not just describe your own life.
Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা
**উত্তরের ছাঁচ: PEEL।** *Point* — অবস্থান, প্রথম বাক্যেই। *Explain* — কেন। *Example* — একটা নির্দিষ্ট উদাহরণ। *Link* — এক লাইনে গুটিয়ে আনা বা প্রশ্নে ফিরে আসা। যেমন: “Do young people read less than before?” → “I'd say they read differently rather than less. *(P)* Most of my friends never finish a book, but they're reading all day on their phones. *(E)* My younger brother knows more about football than any newspaper could tell him, and all of it comes from articles and threads. *(Ex)* So it's not that reading is disappearing — the shape of it has changed. *(L)*” **যে ভাষাটা এখানে সবচেয়ে বেশি নম্বর আনে: নরম করে বলা (hedging)।** সমাজ নিয়ে সাধারণ কথা বলতে গেলে ইংরেজি নিশ্চিত দাবি পছন্দ করে না। শিখে ফেলুন — *tend to, generally, in most cases, it depends on, arguably, I'd say, to some extent, on the whole*। “Bangladeshi people are lazy about exercise” শোনায় কড়া ও ভুল; “People here tend to walk less than they used to, at least in the cities” শোনায় পরিণত — আর এটাই Grammatical Range-এও গোনা হয়। **প্রশ্নগুলো আসলে কয়েক রকমের, আর প্রত্যেকটার নিজস্ব ভাষা আছে।** *তুলনা (আগে বনাম এখন):* used to, back then, these days, compared with। *কারণ:* one reason for this is, this largely comes down to, partly because। *ভবিষ্যৎ:* is likely to, I imagine, in the next ten years, may well。 *দুই দিক:* on the one hand… on the other, while it's true that…, having said that。 *সমাধান:* the most effective step would be, unless… it's unlikely that。 এই পাঁচটা দলের দু-তিনটে করে বাক্যাংশ জানা থাকলে যেকোনো প্রশ্নে শুরু করার জায়গা থাকে। **তিনটে ভুল, যেগুলো বাংলাদেশি পরীক্ষার্থীর এখানে সবচেয়ে বেশি হয়।** এক, **নিজের গল্পে ফিরে যাওয়া** — Part 3-এ প্রশ্ন সমাজ নিয়ে, তাই “In my family we always…” দিয়ে পুরো উত্তর দিলে প্রশ্নটার উত্তর হয় না; নিজের অভিজ্ঞতা ব্যবহার করুন **উদাহরণ হিসেবে**, উত্তর হিসেবে নয়। দুই, **“I don't know” বলে থেমে যাওয়া** — জানা না থাকলেও একটা যুক্তিসঙ্গত মত তৈরি করে বলুন; এটা ভাষার পরীক্ষা, জ্ঞানের নয়। সময় দরকার হলে ইংরেজিতেই কিনে নিন: “That's not something I've thought about, but off the top of my head…” তিন, **পরীক্ষকের সাথে দ্বিমত করতে ভয় পাওয়া** — পরীক্ষক প্রায়ই পাল্টা প্রশ্ন করেন (“But wouldn't that be expensive?”); এটা আপনাকে আটকাতে নয়, আপনাকে আরও কথা বলাতে। মত বদলালে বদলান, অথবা বলুন “That's a fair point, but I still think…”
Examplesউদাহরণ
- Giving an opinion: 'In my view, technology has changed the way we communicate for the better, on the whole.'মত দেওয়া: 'In my view, technology has changed the way we communicate for the better, on the whole.' — আমার মতে, প্রযুক্তি সামগ্রিকভাবে যোগাযোগের ধরন ভালোর দিকে বদলেছে।
- Explaining: 'This is largely because people can now stay in touch across long distances instantly.'ব্যাখ্যা: 'This is largely because people can now stay in touch across long distances instantly.' — এর প্রধান কারণ, মানুষ এখন দূরত্বেও তাৎক্ষণিক যোগাযোগ রাখতে পারে।
- Comparing past and present: 'In the past, people relied on letters, whereas nowadays we message in seconds.'অতীত-বর্তমান তুলনা: 'In the past, people relied on letters, whereas nowadays we message in seconds.' — আগে মানুষ চিঠির ওপর নির্ভর করত, কিন্তু এখন সেকেন্ডেই বার্তা পাঠাই।
- Speculating about the future: 'I'd imagine that in the future, most learning will happen online.'ভবিষ্যৎ নিয়ে অনুমান: 'I'd imagine that in the future, most learning will happen online.' — আমার ধারণা, ভবিষ্যতে বেশিরভাগ শেখা অনলাইনে হবে।
- Balancing both sides: 'On the one hand it saves time, but on the other hand it can feel impersonal.'উভয় দিক ভারসাম্য: 'On the one hand it saves time, but on the other hand it can feel impersonal.' — একদিকে সময় বাঁচে, অন্যদিকে তা আন্তরিকতাহীন মনে হতে পারে।
- Softening a general claim: 'It largely depends on the situation, but generally speaking ...'সাধারণ দাবি নরম করা: 'It largely depends on the situation, but generally speaking ...' — অনেকটা পরিস্থিতির ওপর নির্ভর করে, তবে সাধারণভাবে বললে ...।
- Handling an unexpected question: 'That's something I haven't thought about much, but I suppose ...'অপ্রত্যাশিত প্রশ্ন সামলানো: 'That's something I haven't thought about much, but I suppose ...' — এটা নিয়ে খুব একটা ভাবিনি, তবে আমার ধারণা ...।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Giving short Part-1-style answers: 'Yes, I think so.'
Develop each answer with a reason and an example (3–5 sentences).
Part 3 tests your ability to discuss and extend ideas; short answers cap your fluency band.
Talking only about yourself: 'I use my phone a lot.'
Discuss people and society in general: 'Most people today rely heavily on their phones.'
Part 3 questions are abstract and general, so answers should move beyond personal experience.
Panicking and saying 'I don't know' when unsure.
Reason your way to an opinion: 'I'm not certain, but I'd guess that ...'
It is a language test, not a knowledge test — showing you can speculate scores well.
Listing points with no linking: 'Good. Fast. Cheap.'
Connect ideas: 'It's convenient and, more importantly, affordable for most families.'
Coherence and cohesive devices are part of the fluency and coherence band.
Tipsটিপস
- Use the PEEL method: Point, Explain, Example, Link — for every answer. — প্রতিটি উত্তরে PEEL ব্যবহার করুন: Point, Explain, Example, Link।
- Learn opinion phrases ('in my view', 'it could be argued that') to start answers confidently. — আত্মবিশ্বাসে উত্তর শুরু করতে opinion phrase শিখুন ('in my view', 'it could be argued that')।
- Practise comparing past, present and future — many Part 3 questions ask about change. — অতীত, বর্তমান ও ভবিষ্যৎ তুলনা অনুশীলন করুন — অনেক Part 3 প্রশ্ন পরিবর্তন নিয়ে হয়।
- It is fine to disagree politely or say 'it depends' — just explain your reasoning. — ভদ্রভাবে দ্বিমত করা বা 'it depends' বলা ঠিক আছে — শুধু যুক্তিটা ব্যাখ্যা করুন।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা
How long are the answers expected to be in Part 3?
Longer and more developed than Part 1 — usually three to five sentences. Give your opinion, explain it, and support it with an example or comparison. The examiner may interrupt to ask a follow-up, which is normal.
Is my opinion in Part 3 marked as right or wrong?
No. There are no correct opinions in IELTS Speaking. The examiner assesses your English — fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation — not whether your ideas are 'correct'. Any well-explained view is fine.
What kinds of questions come up in Part 3?
Abstract questions linked to your Part 2 topic — often about causes, effects, comparisons between past and present, advantages and disadvantages, and predictions about the future of society.
