Introductionভূমিকা

In a Bangladeshi viva, a short answer is a respectful answer. You say what was asked, you do not elaborate in front of a teacher, and volunteering extra is close to showing off. Carry that instinct into Part 1 and you hand back four minutes of silence: “Do you like reading?” “Yes, sir.” Nothing is impolite about that answer — it simply gives the examiner nothing to mark. Part 1 is the easiest band on the paper, and it is won by the small act of saying two more sentences than feel necessary.

বাংলাদেশের ভাইভায় ছোট উত্তরই ভদ্র উত্তর। যা জিজ্ঞেস করা হয়েছে তার উত্তর দেবেন, শিক্ষকের সামনে বাড়িয়ে বলবেন না, আর না-চাওয়া কথা বলাটা প্রায় জাহির করার মতো। এই সহজাত অভ্যাসটা Part 1-এ নিয়ে গেলে আপনি চার মিনিট নীরবতা ফেরত দিয়ে আসেন: “Do you like reading?” “Yes, sir.” উত্তরটায় অভদ্রতার কিছুই নেই — শুধু পরীক্ষকের নম্বর দেওয়ার মতো কিছু থাকে না। পুরো পত্রে সবচেয়ে সহজ ব্যান্ডটা এই Part 1-এই, আর সেটা জেতা যায় একটা ছোট কাজে — যতটা দরকার মনে হচ্ছে, তার চেয়ে দুটো বাক্য বেশি বলে।

Definitionসংজ্ঞা

Part 1 is a four-to-five minute interview: about twelve short questions across three familiar topics, always starting with where you live, your work or studies. Two to three sentences each is the target — a direct answer, then a reason, example or detail. Longer than that and the examiner will move on anyway.

Bangla Explanationবাংলা ব্যাখ্যা

**প্রথমে যা ঘটে।** পরীক্ষক রেকর্ডার চালু করে নাম আর পরিচয়পত্র যাচাই করেন — এটা পরীক্ষার অংশ নয়, তাই এখানে সাজানো উত্তরের দরকার নেই; স্বাভাবিকভাবে নাম বলুন আর পাসপোর্টটা দিন। আর “Myself Rahim” নয় — “My name is Rahim Uddin.” এরপরই প্রশ্ন শুরু, প্রায় সবসময় আপনার এলাকা, পড়াশোনা বা চাকরি দিয়ে। **উত্তরের ছাঁচ: উত্তর + কারণ + বিবরণ।** “Do you like your hometown?” → *(উত্তর)* “I do, most of the time.” *(কারণ)* “It's a small town, so everything is within walking distance.” *(বিবরণ)* “My college, the bazaar and my grandmother's house are all on the same road — I've never needed a rickshaw to get anywhere.” তিন, **মুখস্থ পরিচয়** — কোচিংয়ের শেখানো “I am from a lower-middle-class family in a district town of Bangladesh…” শুরু করলেই পরীক্ষক বুঝে যান, আর মুখস্থ অংশ নম্বরের হিসাবেই আসে না। চার, **অতিরিক্ত লম্বা উত্তর** — Part 1-এ এক মিনিটের বক্তৃতা দিলে পরীক্ষক মাঝপথে থামিয়ে দেবেন, আর সেটা ভালো লক্ষণ নয়। **বাংলাদেশি জীবনের কথা বলতে দ্বিধা করবেন না।** ইফতারের আয়োজন, ছাদে ঘুড়ি, ঈদের বাজার, নদীপথে গ্রামে যাওয়া, রিকশা, টং দোকানের চা — পরীক্ষক এগুলো চেনেন কি না তাতে কিছু যায় আসে না; বরং অচেনা জিনিস ব্যাখ্যা করার সুযোগে ভালো ভাষা বেরোয়: “It's a kind of flat rice cake we eat in winter.” চেনা জিনিস নিয়ে বলাটা সহজ, তাই সেখানেই আপনি সবচেয়ে সাবলীল। **আর ছোট কয়েকটা কৌশল।** প্রশ্ন না বুঝলে জিজ্ঞেস করুন — “Sorry, do you mean…?” এটা নম্বর কাটে না, বরং ভাষার দক্ষতা দেখায় (তবে Part 2-এর কার্ড ব্যাখ্যা করতে বলা যায় না)। উত্তরে **কাল** খেয়াল রাখুন: “Do you like…” বর্তমান, “Did you enjoy…” অতীত, “Would you like to…” ভবিষ্যৎ — এখানে কাল বদলে ফেলাটা খুব সাধারণ ভুল। আর ভুল হয়ে গেলে বাক্যটা শেষ করে এগিয়ে যান; বারবার শুধরাতে গেলে Fluency-র নম্বর যায়, ব্যাকরণের নম্বর ফেরত আসে না।

Examplesউদাহরণ

  • Q: Do you work or study? A: 'I'm currently a university student, majoring in accounting. I'm in my final year, so it's quite a busy time for me.'প্রশ্ন: আপনি কি কাজ করেন নাকি পড়েন? উত্তর: 'I'm currently a university student, majoring in accounting. I'm in my final year, so it's quite a busy time for me.' — আমি এখন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্র, accounting-এ পড়ছি; শেষ বর্ষে, তাই বেশ ব্যস্ত সময়।
  • Q: Do you like your hometown? A: 'Yes, I do, mainly because it's peaceful and my whole family lives there. That said, it can be a little quiet for young people.'প্রশ্ন: আপনার শহর কি পছন্দ? উত্তর: 'Yes, I do, mainly because it's peaceful and my whole family lives there. That said, it can be a little quiet for young people.' — হ্যাঁ, কারণ এটা শান্ত ও পরিবার এখানে থাকে; তবে তরুণদের জন্য একটু নীরব।
  • Q: How do you spend your weekends? A: 'It depends, but usually I catch up with friends and read a bit. Lately, I've also started cycling in the morning.'প্রশ্ন: সপ্তাহান্ত কীভাবে কাটান? উত্তর: 'It depends, but usually I catch up with friends and read a bit. Lately, I've also started cycling in the morning.' — নির্ভর করে, তবে সাধারণত বন্ধুদের সাথে সময় কাটাই ও একটু পড়ি; ইদানীং সকালে সাইকেল চালাই।
  • Useful opener when unsure: 'That's an interesting question. I'd say ...'নিশ্চিত না হলে দরকারি শুরু: 'That's an interesting question. I'd say ...' — চমৎকার প্রশ্ন। আমি বলব ...।
  • Adding a reason: 'The main reason is that ...'কারণ যোগ করা: 'The main reason is that ...' — মূল কারণটা হলো ...।
  • Showing a change over time: 'I didn't use to enjoy it, but nowadays I really do.'সময়ের পরিবর্তন দেখানো: 'I didn't use to enjoy it, but nowadays I really do.' — আগে ভালো লাগত না, কিন্তু আজকাল সত্যিই ভালো লাগে।

Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল

  • Q: Do you like reading? A: 'Yes.'

A: 'Yes, I love it — I usually read a novel before bed to relax.'

One-word answers give the examiner nothing to score; always add a reason or detail.

  • Reciting a memorised paragraph about your hometown.

Speak naturally and directly answer the exact question asked.

Examiners are trained to spot rehearsed speech and it lowers your fluency score.

  • Answering with a 60-second speech to each short question.

Keep Part 1 answers to about 2–3 sentences.

Part 1 tests quick, natural responses; over-long answers waste time and sound unnatural.

  • Staying silent while thinking of the perfect word.

Use a filler like 'Let me think ...' and keep going.

Long silences hurt fluency far more than a small vocabulary slip.

Tipsটিপস

  • Use the 'answer + because + example' pattern for almost every question. প্রায় প্রতিটি প্রশ্নে 'উত্তর + because + উদাহরণ' কাঠামো ব্যবহার করুন।
  • Learn a few natural fillers ('Well,' 'Actually,' 'To be honest') to buy thinking time. সময় নিতে কিছু স্বাভাবিক filler শিখুন ('Well,' 'Actually,' 'To be honest')।
  • Smile and speak at a steady pace — confidence helps your pronunciation score. একটু হাসুন ও সমান গতিতে বলুন — আত্মবিশ্বাস pronunciation নম্বরে সাহায্য করে।
  • Practise common topics aloud: home, work/study, hobbies, food, weather, technology. সাধারণ বিষয়গুলো জোরে বলে অনুশীলন করুন: বাসা, কাজ/পড়া, শখ, খাবার, আবহাওয়া, প্রযুক্তি।

Frequently Asked Questionsসাধারণ জিজ্ঞাসা

What topics come up in IELTS Speaking Part 1?

Familiar personal topics such as your home, hometown, work or studies, hobbies, daily routine, food, weather, and technology. The examiner picks two or three of these and asks a few questions on each.

Can I ask the examiner to repeat a question in Part 1?

Yes. If you did not hear or understand, politely say 'Could you repeat that, please?' It is not penalised. However, you cannot ask the examiner to explain the meaning of the question.

Should I memorise answers for Part 1?

No. Prepare ideas and useful phrases for common topics, but do not memorise whole answers. Examiners are trained to detect rehearsed speech, and it lowers your fluency and coherence band.
