In IELTS Speaking Part 2 — the 'long turn' — you get a cue card with a topic, one minute to prepare with paper and pencil, and then you must talk for one to two minutes without interruption. Learning to fill the time smoothly is the key to a high band.
IELTS Speaking Part 2-এ — 'long turn'-এ — একটি cue card দেওয়া হয়, প্রস্তুতির জন্য এক মিনিট কাগজ-কলম দেওয়া হয়, তারপর বাধা ছাড়াই এক থেকে দুই মিনিট বলতে হয়। সময়টা সাবলীলভাবে ভরাটই ভালো band-এর মূল চাবিকাঠি।

The cue card gives a topic (for example, 'Describe a person who inspired you') with three or four bullet points to cover. You plan for 60 seconds, then speak for up to 2 minutes covering all the bullets.
Cue card-এ একটি বিষয় থাকে (যেমন, 'Describe a person who inspired you') এবং ৩–৪টি bullet point বলতে হয়। ৬০ সেকেন্ড পরিকল্পনা করে, তারপর সব bullet ধরে ২ মিনিট পর্যন্ত বলুন।

নিয়ম: এক মিনিটের প্রস্তুতিতে প্রতিটি bullet-এর পাশে ২–৩টি keyword লিখে ফেলুন — পুরো বাক্য নয়। বলার সময় সব bullet ছুঁয়ে যান, তবে শেষ 'and explain why'-অংশে সবচেয়ে বেশি সময় দিন, কারণ এখানেই বিস্তারিত বলা যায়। কমপক্ষে ১ মিনিট ৩০ সেকেন্ড বলার চেষ্টা করুন; examiner ২ মিনিটে থামিয়ে দেবেন — এটা স্বাভাবিক, ভয় নেই। কোনো bullet মনে না থাকলেও থেমে যাবেন না; পরিচিত অংশ থেকে বলা চালিয়ে যান। অতীতের কোনো ঘটনা হলে past tense ঠিক রাখুন।

- Adding detail: 'What really stood out was how patient and hard-working she was.'বিস্তারিত যোগ: 'What really stood out was how patient and hard-working she was.' — সবচেয়ে চোখে পড়ত তাঁর ধৈর্য ও পরিশ্রম।
- Explaining why (the key part): 'The reason she inspires me is that she never gave up, even in tough times.'কেন তা ব্যাখ্যা (মূল অংশ): 'The reason she inspires me is that she never gave up, even in tough times.' — তিনি আমাকে অনুপ্রাণিত করেন কারণ কঠিন সময়েও তিনি হাল ছাড়েননি।
- Buying time smoothly: 'Now, let me think about how to describe this properly ...'সাবলীলভাবে সময় নেওয়া: 'Now, let me think about how to describe this properly ...' — এবার ভাবি কীভাবে ঠিকভাবে বর্ণনা করা যায় ...।
- Closing the talk: 'So that's the person who has influenced me the most, and I'm truly grateful to her.'শেষ করা: 'So that's the person who has influenced me the most, and I'm truly grateful to her.' — তো ইনিই আমাকে সবচেয়ে বেশি প্রভাবিত করেছেন, আর আমি তাঁর কাছে সত্যিই কৃতজ্ঞ।
- Useful phrase for a place topic: 'It's tucked away in a quiet corner of the city.'স্থান বিষয়ের দরকারি বাক্য: 'It's tucked away in a quiet corner of the city.' — এটা শহরের এক নিরিবিলি কোণে লুকানো।
Common Mistakesসাধারণ ভুল
Writing full sentences during the 1-minute preparation.
Note only 2–3 keywords next to each bullet point.
You only have 60 seconds; keywords are enough and let you speak naturally, not read aloud.
Finishing the talk in 40 seconds and going silent.
Keep talking until the examiner stops you, aiming for close to 2 minutes.
A very short answer cannot show enough language for a high fluency and coherence band.
Skipping the final 'and explain why' bullet.
Give the most time and detail to the 'why/how' bullet.
The explanation bullet is where you show your best vocabulary and extended reasoning.
Mixing tenses: 'Yesterday I go to the market and buy fish.'
Keep past events in the past tense: 'Yesterday I went to the market and bought fish.'
Cue cards often describe past experiences; consistent past tense is scored under grammar.
Memorising a talk and forcing it onto a different topic.
Adapt your ideas to the exact card in front of you.
A memorised, off-topic talk is obvious to examiners and heavily penalised.
Tipsটিপস
- Use the bullet points as your paragraph plan — talk about them in order. — Bullet point-গুলোকে প্যারার পরিকল্পনা হিসেবে ব্যবহার করুন — ক্রম অনুযায়ী বলুন।
- Tell a short story with a beginning, middle and feeling — stories are easy to extend. — শুরু, মধ্য ও অনুভূতিসহ ছোট গল্প বলুন — গল্প সহজে বাড়ানো যায়।
- If you finish early, add how you felt and why it mattered to you. — তাড়াতাড়ি শেষ হলে যোগ করুন — কেমন লেগেছিল ও কেন তা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ছিল।
- Practise with a timer so 2 minutes of speaking feels natural, not stressful. — টাইমার দিয়ে অনুশীলন করুন, যাতে ২ মিনিট বলা স্বাভাবিক মনে হয়, চাপ না লাগে।

What happens if I cannot fill the full two minutes?
Aim for at least a minute and a half. If you run out of ideas, expand on how you felt, why it was important, or compare it with something similar. Going silent early limits how high your fluency band can be.
Can I keep my notes while I speak?
Yes. You may glance at the notes you made during the one-minute preparation while you speak. Just do not read them out word for word — that sounds unnatural and hurts your fluency score.
What if the examiner stops me before I finish?
That is completely normal. The examiner stops you at two minutes because time is up, not because your answer was bad. It often means you spoke fluently for the full time, which is a good sign.
